
{"id":1248,"date":"2025-06-11T09:50:59","date_gmt":"2025-06-11T09:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2025\/06\/11\/dozens-of-white-rhinos-relocated-from-south-africa-to-rwanda\/"},"modified":"2025-06-11T09:50:59","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T09:50:59","slug":"dozens-of-white-rhinos-relocated-from-south-africa-to-rwanda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2025\/06\/11\/dozens-of-white-rhinos-relocated-from-south-africa-to-rwanda\/","title":{"rendered":"Dozens of white rhinos relocated from South Africa to Rwanda"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><em>Two batches of 35 rhinos moved by truck and airliner as part of major rewilding effort involving South Africa and Rwanda.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Seventy southern white rhinos have completed a journey of more than 3,400 kilometres (at least 2,112 miles) by truck and Boeing 747 from South Africa to Rwanda in what has been described as the largest translocation of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>Part of a rewilding initiative, the rhinos were transported in two groups of 35 \u2013 first by airliner then by road \u2013 from South Africa\u2019s Munywana Conservancy to the Akagera National Park in Rwanda, central Africa\u2019s largest protected wetland, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final phase of the 3,400km journey involved the rhino being transported by truck in individual steel crates from Munywana to King Shaka International Airport in Durban,\u201d the RDB said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were then carefully loaded by cranes into a Boeing 747, flown to Kigali International Airport, and finally transported to Akagera National Park by road,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The development board said the aim was to eventually rewild more than 2,000 rhinos \u201cto safe, well-managed protected areas across the continent\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udcf9 70 southern white rhinos have found a new home in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AkageraPark?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AkageraPark<\/a>! \ud83e\udd8f<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AfricanParks?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AfricanParks<\/a>, Rwanda is restoring the park\u2019s ecosystem and protecting rhino populations for future generations. \ud83c\udf3f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VisitRwanda?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VisitRwanda<\/a>\ud83c\uddf7\ud83c\uddfc <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cWbGp45vu1\">pic.twitter.com\/cWbGp45vu1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Visit Rwanda (@visitrwanda_now) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/visitrwanda_now\/status\/1932433180302119281?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The rhinos were released into the Rwandan park after their two-day journey and a veterinary team will monitor their progress in order to \u201cmanage any stress associated with the move and to ensure each rhino adapts well to its new environment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Described as \u201cthe first rhino move by air of this scale\u201d, the rewilding initiative aims to support population growth for white rhinos and \u201csecure a new breeding stronghold in Rwanda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>White rhinos were once abundant across sub-Saharan Africa but their numbers have dramatically fallen due to large-scale poaching and hunting during colonial times.<\/p>\n<p>According to the International Rhino Foundation (IRF), rhino poaching in Africa rose by 4 percent from 2022 to 2023, with at least 586 rhinos poached in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The southern white rhino, one of two subspecies, is now listed as \u201cnear threatened\u201d, with roughly 17,000 individuals remaining, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).<\/p>\n<p>The northern white rhino is considered critically endangered, with the number of remaining mature adults listed by the IUCN as two at most.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">70 southern white rhino completed a 3,400 km journey from South Africa to Rwanda\u2019s Akagera National Park.
