In the days that followed, Israel and Iran traded missiles as casualties mounted on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>The United States entered the military clash on June 22 with bunker-buster strikes on Iran\u2019s Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n<p>A fragile ceasefire was brokered by the US on June 24, hours after Iran had fired missiles at its largest airbase in the Middle East, based in Qatar.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-were-affected-in-iran\">How many people were affected in Iran?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Iran\u2019s Ministry of Health and Medical Education, thousands of people were injured, hundreds were killed, and public infrastructure was damaged.<\/p>\n<p>As of June 24:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Total injured: 4,746, including 185 women<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Total people killed: 610, including 49 women and 13 children. The youngest was two months old.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Injured healthcare workers: 20<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Healthcare workers killed: 5<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Damaged ambulances: 9<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Damaged hospitals: 7<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Damaged health units: 4<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Damaged emergency bases: 6<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3801632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3801632\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Interactive_Human_toll_June24_2025_2-01-1750948963.png?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C963&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"Interactive_Human_toll_June24_2025_REVISED\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3801632\">(Al Jazeera)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Iran, as the bombardment began, thousands of Iranians tried to flee the capital and other major cities towards northern provinces bordering the Caspian Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly nine million people headed out in cars from the major cities, especially Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was Zein*.<\/p>\n<p>Zein, 34, says he left his home in Tehran and headed to Kelardasht in Mazandaran province, north of the capital, on the Caspian Sea coast. The road trip took nearly 16 hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic out of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our area, there are many military zones nearby. Because of the warnings they had given, we didn\u2019t feel safe or have peace of mind,\u201d he says. \u201cI think Tehran felt very panicked, and we were just thinking about getting ourselves out of Tehran and reaching somewhere where we could feel more secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike his parents\u2019 generation, who lived through the devastation of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, this was Zein\u2019s first time experiencing such intense military conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear of not knowing whether you\u2019ll ever return to your home or not. Whether your home will still be there or not. You have to leave your city with a thousand worries, and in such a terrifying situation, because of the roads, the traffic, and the lack of management, you somehow have to get yourself to safety,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there\u2019s no support \u2013 you have to figure everything out on your own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Interactive_Displacement-Map_June25_2025-1750944847.png?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C963&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"Interactive_Displacement Map_June25_2025-1750944847\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-widespread-were-the-attacks-on-iran-by-israel\">How widespread were the attacks on Iran by Israel?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Al Jazeera\u2019s Sanad fact-checking agency, Israel and the US launched at least 145 air strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>The actual count may be much higher, as another source, the Armed Conflict Location and Event data (ACLED) tabulated at least 508 air strikes by Israeli forces on Iran.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-did-iran-retaliate-and-attack-israel\">How did Iran retaliate and attack Israel?<\/h2>\n<p>According to ACLED, Iran attacked Israel at least 120 times. These strikes included ballistic missiles and drones. Many were intercepted with US help and some hit residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>Iran mainly targeted Tel Aviv and areas around it, and one of the significant hits was the Soroka Medical Center \u2013 a strike that injured dozens.
