British foreign secretary pledges support for Syria\u2019s new government after talks with interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The United Kingdom has announced it is formally restoring diplomatic ties with Syria as British Foreign Secretary David Lammy travelled to the capital Damascus to meet with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n

Al-Sharaa received Lammy on Saturday alongside Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, according to photos of the meeting released by the presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter over a decade of conflict, there is renewed hope for the Syrian people,\u201d Lammy said in a statement<\/a> released by his office, noting that the visit was the first by a British minister to Syria in 14 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK is re-establishing diplomatic relations because it is in our interests to support the new government to deliver their commitment to build a stable, more secure and prosperous future for all Syrians,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Syria has been improving relations with Western countries after longtime President Bashar al-Assad was removed from power<\/a> in December 2024 in an offensive led by al-Sharaa\u2019s\u00a0Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) armed group.<\/p>\n

In April, the British government lifted sanctions<\/a> against a dozen Syrian entities, including government departments and media outlets, to help the country rebuild after al-Assad\u2019s fall.<\/p>\n

Weeks earlier, the UK had dropped sanctions against two dozen Syrian businesses, mostly banks and oil companies.<\/p>\n

On Monday, United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order<\/a> to dismantle a web of sanctions against Syria that had crippled the country\u2019s economy under al-Assad.<\/p>\n

In a statement posted on X, al-Shaibani \u2013 the Syrian foreign minister \u2013 welcomed Trump\u2019s decision, saying it would \u201copen the door of long-awaited reconstruction and development\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will lift the obstacle against economic recovery and open the country to the international community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Syria\u2019s new leaders<\/a> have been struggling to rebuild the country\u2019s decimated economy and infrastructure after nearly 14 years of civil war that killed half a million people.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
