They remain in custody,\u201d the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier statement, the police force said the protesters were detained \u201con suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act 2000\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have been taken into custody. Palestine Action is a proscribed group and officers will act where criminal offences are committed,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign group Defend Our Juries said in an earlier statement that a priest and a number of health professionals were among those detained.\u00a0The protesters had held cardboard signs, reading: \u201cI oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe commend the Counter Terrorism police for their decisive action in protecting the people of London from some cardboard signs opposing the genocide in Gaza and expressing support for those taking action to prevent it,\u201d a Defend Our Juries spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Passersby condemned the arrests as police intervened in the demonstration at around noon local time (11:00 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMet Police, you are puppets of the Zionist state\u201d and \u201cleave them alone\u201d, some were quoted as shouting by the Press Association, the British news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Other supporters, not directly involved in the Palestine Action protest, shouted, \u201cWho do you protect? Who do you serve?\u201d and \u201cBritish police off our streets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There were further chants of \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free\u201d during the incident.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-ban\">The ban<\/h2>\n<p>Police warned on Friday that expressing support for Palestine Action would be a criminal offence after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/4\/uks-palestine-action-loses-bid-to-pause-ban-as-terrorist-group\">the ban<\/a> kicked in at midnight.\u00a0\u201cThis includes chanting, wearing clothing or displaying articles such as flags, signs or logos,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n<p>The proscription cleared parliament on Thursday, with a court challenge to try to stop it from coming into effect failing a day later.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government announced last week that it planned to ban Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000 after activists from the group broke into an air force base in southern England.<\/p>\n<p>Two aircraft at the base were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated 7 million pounds ($9.55m) in damage.<\/p>\n<p>Four Palestine Action activists were remanded in custody on Thursday after appearing in court over the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Laura O\u2019Brien, a lawyer and partner at Hodge Jones &#038; Allen Solicitors, explained that under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000, holding a placard in support of Palestine Action can incur up to six months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a member or supporter [of Palestine Action] weighs up to 14 years in prison,\u201d she told Al Jazeera. \u201cSo this is a really big change and serious situation that they\u2019re facing.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3820090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3820090\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AFP__20250704__64TW6WT__v1__HighRes__BritainPalestiniansIsraelConflictPoliticsBan-1751724883.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"Palestine Action protest\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3820090\">A Palestine Action activist speaks to supporters and reporters on Friday [Benjamin Cremel\/AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Palestine Action has condemned the proscription as an attack on free speech.<\/p>\n<p>Anas Mustapha, head of public advocacy at the group CAGE International, also slammed the move as setting a \u201cdangerous precedent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives the state carte blanche to target any protest that it finds objectionable without any legal constraints,\u201d Mustapha said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, it marks the erosion of the fundamental right to protest, which has been regarded as an emblem of the democratic nature of British society.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Source: <\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London police say they arrested 29 protesters hours after the pro-Palestinian activist group was banned in the UK.
