
{"id":1763,"date":"2025-07-16T05:15:20","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T05:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2025\/07\/16\/trump-says-ukraine-should-not-target-moscow\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T05:15:20","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T05:15:20","slug":"trump-says-ukraine-should-not-target-moscow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2025\/07\/16\/trump-says-ukraine-should-not-target-moscow\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says Ukraine should not target Moscow"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><em>US president\u2019s remarks follow report saying he encouraged Kyiv to step up strikes inside Russian territory.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>United States President Donald\u00a0Trump has said Ukraine should not target\u00a0Moscow after he reportedly asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy if Kyiv could strike the Russian capital if he provided long-range weaponry.<\/p>\n<p>Trump made the comments after The Financial Times on Tuesday reported that the US president had encouraged Zelenskyy to step up strikes deep inside Russian territory during their phone call on July 4.<\/p>\n<p>The report, which cited two unnamed people familiar with the discussion, said Trump had also asked his Ukrainian counterpart whether he could hit Moscow and St Petersburg if supplied with weapons with enough range.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a question on Tuesday about whether Zelenskyy should target Moscow, Trump told reporters at the White House that he should not.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also told reporters that \u201cwe\u2019re not looking\u201d at providing Kyiv with longer-range missiles.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared to confirm the discussion\u00a0in a statement provided to multiple media outlets, but said it had been taken out of context.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump was merely asking a question, not encouraging further killing,\u201d\u00a0Leavitt said in the statement provided to outlets including ABC News and USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>In a sharp pivot in his stance on the war, Trump\u00a0on Monday announced that he\u00a0would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/7\/14\/trump-says-us-will-send-patriot-missiles-to-ukraine\">supply more weapons<\/a> to Ukraine, and threatened to impose steep secondary tariffs on Russia\u2019s trade partners if a peace deal is not reached within 50 days.<\/p>\n<p>After returning to the White House in January, Trump repeatedly cast Washington\u2019s support for Ukraine as a drain on the US\u00a0and accused Zelenskyy of hindering efforts to make\u00a0peace.<\/p>\n<p>But the US president\u2019s tone has shifted in recent weeks amid growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s refusal to negotiate an end to his invasion.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Kremlin said Trump\u2019s recent statements, including the threat of sanctions, were \u201cvery serious\u201d and that it would need time to assess the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe certainly need time to analyse what was said in Washington,\u201d Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if and when President Putin deems it necessary, he will definitely comment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Source: <\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US president\u2019s remarks follow report saying he encouraged Kyiv to step up strikes inside Russian territory.
