Gaza mourners have laid to rest five Al Jazeera staff killed in an Israeli air strike on a media tent outside al-Shifa Hospital.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza City have attended the funeral of five Al Jazeera staff, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif, killed in an Israeli air strike outside al-Shifa Hospital.<\/p>\n

On Monday, large crowds joined the funeral procession, carrying the journalists\u2019 bodies from al-Shifa Hospital to Sheikh Radwan Cemetery in central Gaza.<\/p>\n

Colleagues, friends, and relatives embraced in grief, while a man lifted a \u201cpress\u201d flak jacket high above the crowd.<\/p>\n

The strike late on Sunday killed seven people, including correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal. Freelance reporter Mohammed al-Khaldi was also among the dead. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said three more journalists were wounded.<\/p>\n

Footage verified by Al Jazeera<\/a> showed mourners chanting against the killings, with some pledging, \u201cWith our soul and blood, we sacrifice for you, Anas,\u201d in reference to the slain journalist.<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the \u201ctargeted assassination\u201d by Israeli forces, accusing the military of deliberately striking the journalists\u2019 position. \u201cThe Israeli military admitted to their crimes,\u201d the network said, describing the attack as \u201canother blatant and premeditated assault on press freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n

Al-Sharif was \u201cone of Gaza\u2019s bravest journalists\u201d, said Al Jazeera, adding that the attack was \u201ca desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said it was \u201cappalled\u201d by the killings. \u201cIsrael\u2019s pattern of labeling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom,\u201d said CPJ\u2019s regional director, Sara Qudah. \u201cThose responsible for these killings must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media watchdog RSF also condemned what it described as the \u201cacknowledged murder by the Israeli army\u201d of al-Sharif, calling him \u201cone of the most famous journalists from the Gaza Strip (and) the voice of the suffering Israel has imposed on Palestinians in Gaza\u201d. The group said the attack mirrored the 2023 killing of Al Jazeera\u2019s Ismail al-Ghoul, who was also labelled a \u201cterrorist\u201d by Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout strong action from the international community\u2026 we\u2019re likely to witness more such extrajudicial murders of media professionals,\u201d RSF warned, urging the United Nations Security Council to intervene.<\/p>\n

Al-Sharif\u2019s assassination comes more than a year after Israel bombed his family home in a refugee camp, killing his 65-year-old father.<\/p>\n

The killings of the Palestinian journalists come days after Israel\u2019s security cabinet approved a plan to occupy the Gaza Strip. The operation aims to seize Gaza City and forcibly clear nearly one million Palestinian residents.<\/p>\n

Palestinians have pointed out that Gaza \u2013 home to 2.3 million people \u2013 remains under Israeli occupation. Nothing can go in or out without Israeli permission. A total Israeli blockade since March 2 has triggered a starvation crisis, killing more than 200 people, including 100 children, in the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
