Manila says a Chinese navy vessel collides with one from its own coastguard while chasing a Philippine patrol boat.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

China\u2019s coastguard says it has expelled Philippine vessels from waters around the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea while Manila reports a collision in the confrontation.<\/p>\n

The Philippine boats were intercepted on Monday after they ignored warnings in an operation China\u2019s coastguard said was \u201cprofessional, standardised, legitimate and legal\u201d.<\/p>\n

The incident is the latest in a series of confrontations<\/a> between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea, one of the world\u2019s busiest maritime routes, which Beijing claims almost entirely despite an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis. Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also claim parts of the contested waters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe China Coast Guard took necessary measures in accordance with the law, including monitoring, pressing from the outside, blocking and controlling the Philippine vessels to drive them away,\u201d said Gan Yu, a Chinese coastguard spokesperson.<\/p>\n

Chinese vessel damaged?<\/h2>\n

Manila, meanwhile, stated that a Chinese navy vessel collided with one from its own coastguard while chasing a Philippine patrol boat, and it released video footage of the confrontation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe [Chinese coastguard vessel] CCG 3104, which was chasing the [Philippine coastguard vessel] BRP Suluan at high speed, performed a risky manoeuvre from the [Philippine] vessel\u2019s starboard quarter, leading to the impact with the PLA [People\u2019s Liberation Army] Navy warship,\u201d spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis resulted in substantial damage to the CCG vessel\u2019s forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred as the Philippine coastguard escorted boats distributing aid to fishermen in the area, Tarriela added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a video sent to reporters, a Chinese coastguard vessel can be seen heading towards a Philippine coastguard vessel when suddenly a Chinese navy ship cuts between and that\u2019s when the two Chinese ships collide with each other,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Barnaby Lo, reporting from Manila.<\/p>\n

The Chinese coastguard vessel sustained \u201csignificant damage\u201d, a direct result of \u201cdangerous maneuvering by the Chinese\u201d, Lo cited the Philippines as stating.<\/p>\n

China made no mention about the collision in its statement.<\/p>\n

Manila promises continued presence in disputed waterway<\/h2>\n

Tarriela told the AFP news agency that the Chinese crew \u201cnever responded\u201d to the Philippine ship\u2019s offer of assistance.<\/p>\n

During the incident, the BRP Suluan was \u201ctargeted with a water cannon\u201d by the Chinese but \u201csuccessfully\u201d evaded it, Tarriela\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said the country\u2019s patrol vessels would \u201ccontinue to be present\u201d in the area to defend and exercise Manila\u2019s sovereign rights over what it considers to be part of its territory.<\/p>\n

The Scarborough Shoal<\/a>, a triangular chain of reefs and rocks, has been a flashpoint of tension between the countries since China seized it from the Philippines in 2012.<\/p>\n

Marcos also addressed another source of tension with Beijing, stating China has \u201cmisinterpreted\u201d his recent comments saying Manila would be inevitably drawn into a conflict between China and Taiwan<\/a> should one erupt.<\/p>\n

China accused Marcos of \u201cplaying with fire\u201d after the Philippine leader said during a visit to India that \u201cthere is no way that the Philippines can stay out of it\u201d due to its proximity to Taiwan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are, I think for propaganda purposes, misinterpreted,\u201d Marcos said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWar over Taiwan will drag the Philippines kicking and screaming into the conflict. That is what I was trying to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
