
{"id":2464,"date":"2025-08-30T18:54:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T18:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2025\/08\/30\/palestinian-authority-urges-us-to-reinstate-abbass-visa-before-unga\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T18:54:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T18:54:25","slug":"palestinian-authority-urges-us-to-reinstate-abbass-visa-before-unga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2025\/08\/30\/palestinian-authority-urges-us-to-reinstate-abbass-visa-before-unga\/","title":{"rendered":"Palestinian Authority urges US to reinstate Abbas\u2019s visa before UNGA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><em>Mahmoud Abbas\u2019s spokesperson calls on countries to exert pressure on Washington before next month\u2019s UN annual meetings.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas\u2019s office has urged the United States to reverse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/29\/us-denies-visas-for-palestinian-officials-ahead-of-un-assembly\">a decision<\/a> to revoke the Palestinian leader\u2019s visa, just weeks before he was set to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The Palestinian presidency expressed \u201castonishment\u201d at Washington\u2019s decision on Friday to rescind the visas for Abbas and 80 other Palestinian officials before next month\u2019s high-level meetings at UN headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Abbas has addressed the General Assembly for many years and generally leads the Palestinian delegation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call upon the American administration to reverse its decision,\u201d Abbas\u2019s spokesperson spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh told The Associated Press on Saturday, warning that the move \u201cwill only increase tension and escalation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been in contact since yesterday with Arab and foreign countries, especially those directly concerned with this issue. This effort will continue around the clock,\u201d Abu Rudeineh said.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson also urged other countries to put pressure on US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration to reverse its decision, including most notably those that have organised a high-level conference about reviving the two-state solution.<\/p>\n<p>Set for September 22, the conference is being co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ideologically-driven\">\u2018Ideologically driven\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s visa curbs come amid growing condemnation of Israel\u2019s devastating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2025\/8\/30\/updates\">war on Palestinians<\/a> in the Gaza Strip and a wave of Israeli settler and military violence in the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The deadly attacks have prompted a growing number of countries to announce plans to recognise an independent Palestinian state at the UN in September.<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the revocations on Friday by accusing the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) of \u201cnot complying with their commitments\u201d and \u201cundermining the prospects for peace\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio also accused the PA of taking part in \u201clawfare campaigns\u201d, including appeals to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court to hold Israeli accountable for abuses in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>But Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, a US-based think tank, accused the Trump administration is \u201cclearly violating diplomatic protocol\u201d in its decision to revoke the visas.<\/p>\n<p>As a host state, the US is meant to grant visas to UN member-state representatives and officials to visit the international body\u2019s headquarters in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s going on here is clearly ideologically driven,\u201d Duss told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people inside the Trump administration who are working closely with the right-wing Israeli government and their goal is to simply remove the Palestinian liberation movement from the international agenda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do not recognise the Palestinian peoples\u2019 right to state, and they\u2019re both trying to prevent that on the ground in Palestine and now they\u2019re trying to remove them from the international agenda in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"european-criticism\">European criticism<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the European Union\u2019s foreign policy chief said the bloc is calling on Washington to reconsider its visa denials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the light of the existing agreements between the UN and its host state, we all urge for this decision to be reconsidered,\u201d Kaja Kallas said on Saturday following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also said the General Assembly \u201ccannot suffer any restrictions on access\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United Nations headquarters is a place of neutrality, a sanctuary dedicated to peace, where conflicts are resolved,\u201d Barrot said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he spoke with Abbas on Saturday to express his \u201cfirm support\u201d after the \u201cunjust\u201d visa revocations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPalestine has the right to make its voice heard at the United Nations and in all international forums,\u201d Sanchez wrote in a post on social media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Source: <\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mahmoud Abbas\u2019s spokesperson calls on countries to exert pressure on Washington before next month\u2019s UN annual meetings.
