All the houses collapsed and everyone was screaming,\u201d he told Al Jazeera, sitting on the ruins of his home, with several bags of whatever belongings he could recover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI managed to get out, but my youngest daughter was trapped inside, crying, \u2018Father, get me out of here!\u201d By the time we reached her, she had passed away,\u201d he said, his voice trembling with grief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my youngest and most beloved daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rahim said another 100 or so of his neighbours were killed in the quake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dead and injured were countless. The earthquake was terrifying, and leads people to despair,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of victims are from Kunar province, where most people live in wood and mud-brick homes built along steep river valleys surrounded by towering mountains.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) said as of September 3, at least 6,700 homes have been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Rahim told Al Jazeera he was now living in a tent, and was worried about winter approaching as the area receives \u201cheavy snowfall\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need most are proper homes to survive the cold,\u201d he said. \u201cI call on the whole world, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to help us. We have lost everything, even our livestock and chickens. Nothing remains.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rescue-efforts-continue\">Rescue efforts continue<\/h2>\n<p>Treacherous roads, relentless aftershocks and limited aid mean many communities remain cut off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting here was a harrowing experience,\u201d recounted Al Jazeera\u2019s Hashem. \u201cWe were driving for hours on winding cliffside roads, with aftershocks shaking the ground beneath us until we finally made it.<\/p>\n<p>While rescue workers were \u201cworking around the clock\u201d in search of survivors, hope was fading, Hashem said. \u201cThe official death toll isn\u2019t final, with so many still missing, the number will most certainly rise,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>WHO has said landslides and blocked roads have obstructed relief work. The organisation has appealed for $4m in funds to provide \u201clife-saving health interventions\u201d coupled with supporting \u201cwater, sanitation, and hygiene activities\u201d for residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need food assistance, safety, and medicine for the children,\u201d volunteer Abdulrahman Sharafat told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan is prone to powerful earthquakes because it sits where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
