That was not our intent,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Holocaust Museum LA also promised to \u201cdo better\u201d and to \u201censure that posts in the future are more thoughtfully designed and thoroughly vetted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The museum, which is currently closed for construction until June 2026, quickly faced criticism online after journalist Ryan Grim of Drop Site News reposted a screenshot of the deleted message, writing: \u201cSpeechless. No words for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yasmine Taeb, a human rights lawyer and progressive strategist, called the museum\u2019s move \u201cabsolutely disgusting\u201d, saying that the museum is \u201ccowering under pressure\u201d from pro-Israel voices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountless <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/1\/israel-committing-genocide-in-gaza-scholars-group-says\">genocide scholars<\/a> and human rights organisations have confirmed what Israel is doing in Gaza is textbook definition of genocide,\u201d Taeb told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s appalling that a museum established for the purpose of educating the public about genocide and the Holocaust not only refuses to acknowledge the reality of Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza, but [is] removing a social media post that merely stated that \u2018never again\u2019 is not intended for just Jews, in order for it to not be interpreted as a response to the genocide in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original now-deleted post did not mention Gaza, but it faced a barrage of pro-Israel comments expressing disapproval, including some that called on donors to stop funding the institution.<\/p>\n<p>By deleting the post and issuing the subsequent statement, the museum sparked accusations of backtracking on a universal anti-genocide principle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a world where the Holocaust Museum has to aploogise and retract for simply appearing to sympathise with Palestinians,\u201d Palestinian American activist and comedian Amer Zahr told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that does not illustrate the historic dehumanisation that Arab Americans have had to live with, I don\u2019t know what does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assal Rad, a researcher with the Arab Center Washington DC, called the controversy \u201cunbelievable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPalestinians are so dehumanized that they\u2019re excluded from \u2018never again,\u2019 apparently their genocide is the exception,\u201d Rad wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Political commentator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/podcasts\/2025\/8\/19\/the-take-twitch-to-politics-hasan-piker-on-gaza-and-the-us-right\">Hasan Piker<\/a> also slammed the museum\u2019s decision. \u201cA real shame that even a tepid general anti-genocide statement was met with unimaginable resistance from Israel supporters,\u201d he wrote in a social media post.<\/p>\n<p>The Holocaust Museum LA did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Source: <\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Holocaust Museum LA says the post was misinterpreted as a \u2018political statement\u2019 and promises to \u2018do better\u2019.
