A Qatari security force member was also killed in the unprecedented attack, which has sent tensions in the region skyrocketing.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas leaders were meeting to discuss a new deal proposed by US President Donald Trump when the attack happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil members underscored the importance of de-escalation and expressed their solidarity with\u00a0Qatar,\u201d said the statement, drafted by France and the United Kingdom, which nonetheless stopped short of explicitly mentioning Israel.<\/p>\n<p>It also emphasised that \u201creleasing the hostages, including those killed by Hamas, and ending the war and suffering in Gaza\u201d were \u201ctop priority\u201d. More than 40 captives are still held in Gaza, but only 20 of them are believed to be alive.<\/p>\n<p>The US, which traditionally shields its ally Israel at the United Nations, appeared to deliver a strong rebuke to Israel, reflecting President Donald Trump\u2019s purported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/11\/trump-response-to-israels-qatar-attack-undermines-us-credibility-analysts\">unhappiness<\/a> with the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea said: \u201cUnilateral bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation working very hard and bravely taking risks alongside the United States to broker peace, does not advance Israel\u2019s or America\u2019s goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, it is inappropriate for any member to use this to question Israel\u2019s commitment to bringing their hostages home,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from New York, Al Jazeera\u2019s Gabriel Elizondo said that diplomatic sources had told him the US \u201cpushed back\u201d against stronger language against Israel in the statement, which was nonetheless \u201chighly significant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, Shea had made it clear that \u201cthe US cannot and will not defend Israel\u2019s attack on Qatar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, the US still backs Israel. Clearly, the US will still \u2026 protect Israel in the Security Council, but this was a bridge too far for the United States,\u201d said Elizondo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be interesting to see in the coming hours and days if we even get more clarification from the White House on this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>After Tuesday\u2019s attack, the White House had said President Trump was not notified in advance. Upon learning of the attack, the president had allegedly asked his envoy, Steve Witkoff, to warn Qatar immediately, but the attack had already started.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-new-and-perilous-chapter\">\u2018A new and perilous chapter\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The Security Council statement highlighted \u201csupport for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of\u00a0Qatar\u201d, underlining the country\u2019s crucial role as \u201ca key mediator\u201d in peace talks between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani flew in from Doha for the marathon three-hour session, telling the UNSC that Doha would continue its humanitarian and diplomatic efforts, but would not tolerate further breaches of its security and sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>Blasting Israel\u2019s leaders as \u201carrogant\u201d, he said that the timing of the attacks during mediation efforts showed that the country intended to derail them. \u201cIsrael is undermining the stability of the region impetuously,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo described Qatar as a \u201cvalued partner in advancing peacemaking\u201d and expressed concern over Israel\u2019s recklessness, saying that the strikes represented an \u201calarming escalation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that Israel\u2019s war on Gaza had killed tens of thousands of people and almost completely destroyed Gaza, noting that the situation in the occupied West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, had \u201ccontinued to spiral downward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She also noted Israel\u2019s other \u201cdangerous escalations\u201d across the region, involving Iran, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Israeli attack on Doha potentially opens a new and perilous chapter in this devastating conflict, seriously threatening regional peace and stability,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-sign-of-madness\">\u2018A sign of madness\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In other interventions, Algeria\u2019s ambassador to the UN, Amar Bendjama, said: \u201cIsrael behaves as if law does not exist, as if borders are illusions, as if sovereignty itself is a dispensable motion, as if the UN charter is an ephemeral text.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noting Israel\u2019s attacks on Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and \u201crenowned peace broker\u201d Qatar, he added: \u201cThis is not strength, it is recklessness. It is a sign of madness. It is the conduct of an extremist government, emboldened by immunity [and] impunity. A government driving the region and the whole world toward the abyss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s UN envoy, Danny Danon, said Israel carried out its strike on Hamas leaders, who had directed attacks planned in the \u201cluxury confines of Doha\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Danon said these were the \u201csole targets\u201d of the attack, adding that they were \u201cterrorists\u201d rather than \u201clegitimate politicians, diplomats, or representatives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Elizondo said the prevailing sentiment at the session was that \u201cthe world clearly stands behind Qatar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was widespread support for Qatar and widespread condemnation of Israel,\u201d he said. \u201cYou also saw countries wanting accountability for Israel\u2019s continued crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Security Council has condemned the Israeli attack on the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday and called for de-escalation in a statement agreed by all 15 members, including Israel\u2019s chief ally, the United States.
