Thank you for your attention to this matter!\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>It was unclear who or what exactly the US president plans to designate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/1\/12\/trump-privately-blamed-antifa-people-for-storming-us-capitol\">with Antifa, short for anti-fascists<\/a>, being a loosely organised band of activists opposed to right-wing ideology that lacks a distinct leader, structure or membership list.<\/p>\n<p>During his first term, Trump also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/5\/31\/trump-says-us-will-designate-antifa-terrorist-organisation\">threatened to designate Antifa<\/a> a terrorist organisation in the wake of widespread protests across the US in response to the killing of unarmed Black man George Floyd in May 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had sought to place blame on Antifa activists for acts of \u201cdomestic terrorism\u201d, as he accused them of instigating and leading heated and sometimes violent protests.<\/p>\n<p>Legal scholars and analysts said at the time that Trump had no legal authority to declare such a designation on a domestic group in the US the same way Washington does with foreign entities.<\/p>\n<p>Mary McCord, a former senior Justice Department official, told Al Jazeera during Trump\u2019s first term that there was no mechanism for \u201cdesignating domestic organisations as terrorist organisations\u201d and Trump\u2019s attempts to designate Antifa would \u201craise significant First Amendment concerns\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>These legal limitations remain a factor today, and critics have also raised questions as to how a \u201cterrorism\u201d designation would be enforced and handled, given the amorphous nature of Antifa supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s latest announcement on Antifa came as senior White House officials said on Monday that they would dismantle a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/15\/white-house-promises-crackdown-on-left-wing-terror-after-kirk-killing\">\u201cvast domestic terror movement\u201d<\/a> fomented by left-wing activists and which, they claim, had resulted in right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk being assassinated last week.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff, said the Trump administration is \u201cgoing to channel all of the anger that we have over the organised campaign that led to this assassination, to uproot and dismantle these terrorist networks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators have yet to provide a motive for Kirk\u2019s killing \u2013 which authorities allege was carried out by 22-year-old Utah native Tyler Robinson \u2013 but many on the right of the political divide have blamed leftist ideology for the assassination.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trump described the group as a \u2018sick, dangerous, radical left disaster\u2019, as well as a \u2018major terrorist organisation\u2019.
