I look forward to seeing him. (Photo by Handout\/Dong-A Ilbo via Getty Images)\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3970806\">North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump inside the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separating South and North Korea on June 30, 2019, in Panmunjom, South Korea [Handout: Dong-A Ilbo via Getty Images]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"between-the-united-states-and-south-korea-with-kim-jong-un-s-sister-kim-yo-jong-describing-them-as-a-reckless-invasion-rehearsal\">Despite overtures from Lee and Trump, North Korea has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/20\/n-korea-says-s-korea-cannot-be-a-diplomatic-partner-as-us-drills-continue\">been critical<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/19\/kim-jong-un-pledges-to-speed-up-nuclear-build-up-over-us-south-korea-drills\">joint military drills<\/a> between the US and South Korea, with Kim Jong Un\u2019s sister, Kim Yo Jong, describing them as a \u201creckless\u201d invasion rehearsal.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-more-realistic-goal\">A more realistic goal<\/h2>\n<p>In recent interviews with the BBC and the Reuters news agency, Lee has also expressed an openness to negotiating his country\u2019s stance on North Korea\u2019s nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the BBC on Sunday, Lee said he would be open to a more \u201crealistic\u201d goal of North Korea agreeing to stop acquiring more nuclear weapons, rather than continuing with \u201cfruitless attempts\u201d at making it give up its existing arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo long as we do not give up on the long-term goal of denuclearisation, I believe there are clear benefits to having North Korea stop its nuclear and missile development,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Reuters, also published on Sunday, Lee acknowledged that sanctions had ultimately failed to deter Pyongyang, which today is adding an estimated 15 to 20 nuclear weapons to its arsenal every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that the previous approach of sanctions and pressure has not solved the problem; it has worsened it,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the Supreme People\u2019s Assembly in Pyongyang on Sunday, Kim also said that sanctions had only made his country stronger and more resilient, despite reports that the nation of some 26 million people has long suffered from a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/3\/3\/is-north-korea-fighting-a-food-crisis\">food crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will never be, and will never ever be for eternity, any negotiations with enemies of exchanging some things out of some obsession with lifting sanctions,\u201d Kim said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3970763\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3970763\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/epa_68d0898fa9bb-1758497167.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"epaselect epa12347964 (L-R) Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev clap on the Tian'anmen Rostrum during a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Sino-Japanese War in Beijing, China, 03 September 2025.
