I left with nothing,\u201d Najwa, a displaced woman from Gaza City, told Al Jazeera. \u201cWe are frightened. Transportation is expensive. We can\u2019t pay to bring our things.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inflicting-terror\">\u2018Inflicting terror\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza intensified overnight, with at least 85 Palestinians killed across the territory on Wednesday \u2013 more than double the number of those killed yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>As the UN warned that Israel\u2019s military is \u201cinflicting terror on the Palestinian population of Gaza City and forcing tens of thousands to flee\u201d, Israeli military chief of staff Eyal Zamir claimed Palestinians were being pushed southward \u201cfor their safety\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But UN investigators have rejected those claims. A commission of inquiry this week concluded that Israel\u2019s actions are aimed at establishing permanent control over Gaza while ensuring a Jewish majority in the occupied West Bank and inside Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Zamir added that \u201cmost of Gaza\u2019s population has already left Gaza City\u201d and that the army \u201cwill continue a systematic and thorough advance\u201d into the enclave\u2019s largest urban centre.<\/p>\n<p>Since the war began on October 7, 2023, at least 65,419 Palestinians have been killed and 167,160 wounded, with thousands more believed to be buried beneath the rubble. Israel launched what campaigners say is a war of vengeance after 1,139 people were killed in Israel in a Hamas-led attack in October 2023. About 200 were taken captive by the Palestinian fighters, out of which more than 40 still remain in Gaza.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"condemnation-at-the-united-nations\">Condemnation at the United Nations<\/h2>\n<p>At the UN General Assembly in New York, Israel\u2019s war on Gaza has dominated proceedings, drawing condemnation from leaders across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian told world leaders: \u201cIf you have no sympathy for human pain, the name of human you cannot pertain. Those criminals who bully by murdering children are not worthy of the name \u2018human being\u2019, and they shall never prove to be trustworthy partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa also demanded an immediate ceasefire: \u201cWe stand firmly with the people of Gaza, its children and women and all peoples facing violations and aggression. We call for an immediate end to the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told Al Jazeera that quiet talks are taking place on ending the conflict, building on the \u201cNew York Declaration\u201d roadmap endorsed by 142 states in July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose of us who are closest to the Israeli position are beginning to understand that we cannot just continue with this endless, senseless war, and that includes the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3980380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3980380\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ap_68d470674a86f-1758752871.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"Smoke billows over Gaza City following an Israeli airstrike, as displaced Palestinians flee northern Gaza through Wadi Gaza, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025. Earlier this month, Netanyahu ordered the assassination of Hamas leaders gathering in Doha to discuss a peace proposal by Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli leader unilaterally pulled out of the last ceasefire agreement on March 18 and launched fierce air strikes and imposed a total aid blockade, resulting in famine and starvation deaths. He faces an arrest warrant for war crimes issued by the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p>As Israel becomes increasingly isolated, protests have erupted in Tel Aviv. Hundreds gathered at Ben Gurion airport to denounce Netanyahu as he departed for the UN meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, the Israeli prime minister once again rejected international calls for a Palestinian state. \u201cThe shameful surrender of some leaders to Palestinian terrorism will not bind Israel in any way,\u201d his office said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israel escalates devastating attacks on Palestinians in Gaza despite world leaders calling for ceasefire at UN General Assembly.
