At least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/20\/trump-says-us-struck-another-alleged-drug-smuggling-vessel-killing-three\">17 people have been killed<\/a> in the three attacks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/4\/is-venezuela-the-big-cocaine-menace-trump-claims-it-to-be\">Experts have cast doubt<\/a> on the legality of US attacks on foreign boats in international waters, while data from both the UN and the US itself suggest that Venezuela is not a major source of cocaine coming into the US, as Trump has claimed.<\/p>\n<p>In an address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said of drug smugglers: \u201cTo every terrorist thug smuggling poisonous drugs into the United States of America, please be warned that we will blow you out of existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Colombian President Gustavo Petro used his UNGA address to call for a \u201ccriminal process\u201d to be opened against Trump over the attacks on vessels in the Caribbean, which had killed Venezuelans who had not been convicted of any crime.<\/p>\n<p>The US has so far deployed eight warships to international waters off Venezuela\u2019s coast, backed by F-35 fighter jets sent to Puerto Rico, in what it calls an anti-drug operation.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has also refused an appeal for dialogue from Venezuela\u2019s President Nicolas Maduro, whom the Trump administration has accused of drug trafficking \u2013 a claim Maduro has strenuously denied.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro and his late predecessor, Hugo Chavez, had once been regular presences at the annual UNGA meetings taking place in New York, but Maduro did not come this year, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing him as a fugitive from justice over a US indictment on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/8\/us-doubles-reward-for-arrest-of-venezuelas-president-maduro-to-50m\">drug-trafficking allegations.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back home in Venezuela, Maduro has called for military drills to begin on Saturday, to test \u201cthe people\u2019s readiness for natural catastrophes or any armed conflict\u201d amid US \u201cthreats\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"our-fishermen-are-peaceful\">\u2018Our fishermen are peaceful\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Venezuelan fishers who spoke to the AFP news agency said that the US strikes on Venezuelan boats have made them fearful to venture too far from shore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very upsetting because our country is peaceful, our fishermen are peaceful,\u201d Joan Diaz, 46, told AFP in the northern town of Caraballeda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFishermen go out to work, and they [the US] have taken these measures to come to our \u2026 workplace to intimidate us, to attack us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz said most fishers stay relatively close to shore, but that \u201cto fish for tuna, you have to go very far, and that\u2019s where they [the US forces] are.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3986494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3986494\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AFP__20250926__76NT8ZQ__v1__HighRes__VenezuelaUsConflictDiplomacyDrugsFishing-1758931297.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"A fisherman holds his catch at a harbour in Caraballeda, La Guaira State, Venezuela on September 24, 2025. Imagine the madness. The madness, my God!\u201d he exclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe keep contact with everyone \u2026 especially those who are going a little further,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe report to the authorities where we are going, where we are, and how long our fishing operations will last, and we also report to our fishermen\u2019s councils,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p>But, Garcia added, they would not be intimidated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe say to him: \u2018Mr Donald Trump, we, the fishermen of Venezuela \u2026 will continue to carry out our fishing activities.
