The Russia-friendly Alternativa Bloc came third, followed by the populist Our Party.<\/p>\n<section>\n<h2>Recommended Stories <\/h2>\n<p><span>list of 3 items<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>list 1 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/28\/moldovas-pro-eu-party-takes-lead-in-election-as-vote-counting-under-way\">Moldova\u2019s pro-EU party takes lead in election as vote counting under way<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 2 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/28\/moldova-holds-parliamentary-elections-hit-by-claims-of-russian-interference\">Moldova holds parliamentary elections hit by claims of Russian interference<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 3 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/26\/moldova-bans-pro-russian-parties-ahead-of-sundays-election\">Moldova bans pro-Russian parties ahead of Sunday\u2019s election<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>The pivotal ballot in the nation\u2019s future on Sunday pitted the governing pro-European PAS against several Russia-friendly opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the vote, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean warned of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/22\/moldova-detains-74-people-over-alleged-russia-backed-plot-before-elections\">Russian interference<\/a>, saying Moscow is spending \u201chundreds of millions\u201d of euros as part of an alleged \u201chybrid war\u201d to try to seize power, which he described as \u201cthe final battle for our country\u2019s future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Russia had denied Moldova\u2019s claims that it was waging a disinformation campaign and looking to buy votes and stir unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Geographically, Moldova is landlocked between Ukraine and EU member Romania.<\/p>\n<p>The country has, in recent years, moved westwards in attaining candidate status to the EU in 2022, just after Russia invaded Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Cristian Cantir, a Moldovan associate professor of international relations at Oakland University, told AP that PAS\u2019s victory is \u201ca clear win for pro-European forces in Moldova, which will be able to ensure continuity in the next few years in the pursuit of their ultimate goal of EU integration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA PAS majority saves the party from having to form a coalition that would have most likely been unstable and would have slowed down the pace of reforms to join the EU,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cMoldova will continue to be in a difficult geopolitical environment characterised by Russia\u2019s attempts to pull it back into its sphere of influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The election day was marked by a string of incidents, ranging from bomb threats at multiple polling stations abroad to cyberattacks on electoral and government infrastructure, voters photographing their ballots, and some being illegally transported to polling stations. Three people were also arrested, suspected of plotting to cause unrest after the vote.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, President Maia Sandu called the vote the country\u2019s \u201cmost consequential election\u201d.\u00a0\u201cIts outcome will decide whether we consolidate our democracy and join the EU, or whether Russia drags us back into a grey zone, making us a regional risk,\u201d Sandu wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Recean, in the meantime, had also stressed the threat from Russia: \u201cI call on every Moldovan at home and across Europe: We cannot change what Russia does, but we can change what we do as a people,\u201d he said. \u201cTurn worry into mobilisation and thoughtful action \u2026 Help stop their schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The governing party decisively victorious in parliamentary election widely viewed as a choice between Europe and Russia.
