You might feel that the world doesn\u2019t see your suffering. Where is justice for the Rohingya? Where?\u201d Sawyeddollah asked.<\/p>\n<p>He then held up a photograph of the bodies of several people lying in a river, who he said had been killed in a drone attack by Myanmar\u2019s rebel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2025\/8\/23\/china-india-watch-as-myanmar-rebels-advance-on-strategic-western-frontier\">Arakan Army<\/a> in August 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not isolated cases; they are part of a systematic campaign,\u201d said Sawyeddollah, a student who spent seven years in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/longform\/2023\/8\/25\/what-is-life-like-inside-the-worlds-largest-refugee-camp\">Cox\u2019s Bazar refugee camp<\/a> in southeastern Bangladesh after fleeing Myanmar in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is there no prevention of these inhumane atrocities by Arakan Army?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Wai Wai Nu, the executive director of the Women\u2019s Peace Network-Myanmar, who also addressed the high-level UNGA meeting, told Al Jazeera that the event was a \u201chistoric moment\u201d, which she hoped would \u201cdraw the attention back to the UN on the issue of Rohingya\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Wai Wai Nu used her speech to highlight several pressing priorities, including that humanitarian aid has been blocked from flowing to Rakhine State, where Rohingya communities are located, an issue she said was discussed on the sidelines of the conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we get this, the conference is worth it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to save Rohingya inside Rakhine state.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I delivered opening remarks at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UN?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UN<\/a> General Assembly conference on the Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar this morning.<\/p>\n<p>I urged ending impunity, immediate action to protect the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Rohingya?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Rohingya<\/a>, advancing justice,&#038; addressing root causes for lasting solutions.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UNGA80?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UNGA80<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Myanmar?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Myanmar<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PtSqCf2afM\">pic.twitter.com\/PtSqCf2afM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Wai Wai Nu (@waiwainu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/waiwainu\/status\/1973056379641270397?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 30, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nu also told Al Jazeera that \u201cmany member states also emphasised or highlighted addressing the root causes, and advancing justice and accountability\u201d, in their speeches.<\/p>\n<p>However, she added, the UN event also illustrated that a \u201ccoherent and cohesive approach\u201d to finding a solution to the Rohingya crisis is \u201clacking leadership and coordination, including in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/6\/21\/world-must-rethink-fundamental-approach-to-myanmar-un-expert\">ASEAN region<\/a>\u201c, a grouping of states in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>She also told Al Jazeera that it was important for countries to implement targeted sanctions on Myanmar and \u201call the perpetrators, including military and other armed sectors, including Arakan Army\u201d, as well as a \u201cglobal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/4\/12\/singapore-tightens-screws-on-myanmar-generals-with-arms-trade-crackdown\">arms embargo<\/a>\u201d to protect the Rohingya.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"massive-aid-cuts\">\u2018Massive aid cuts\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking on behalf of the UN secretary-general, Chef de Cabinet Earle Courtenay Rattray, told the meeting of UN member states that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2025\/6\/27\/foreign-aid-cuts-hurt-the-most-vulnerable-in-worlds-largest-refugee-camp\">massive aid cuts<\/a>\u201d have further worsened conditions for the Rohingya, including more than 1 million who fled ethnic cleansing by the military in Myanmar and who have sought refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past 18 months alone, 150,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh, which has generously kept its borders open and given them refuge,\u201d Rattray said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3998058\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3998058\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ap_68dc502ca2483-1759268908.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"An aerial view of the vast Rohingya refugee camp is pictured in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, March 13, 2025. (AP Photo\/Mahmud Hossain Opu)\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3998058\">An aerial view of the vast Rohingya refugee camp in Cox\u2019s Bazar, Bangladesh, on March 13, 2025 [Mahmud Hossain Opu\/AP Photo]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yet, while Rattray said Bangladesh has shown \u201cremarkable hospitality and generosity\u201d, the chief adviser of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, said his country is struggling to continue assisting Rohingya refugees, eight years into the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight years since the genocide began, the plight of the Rohingya continues,\u201d said Yunus, who jointly convened the meeting as well as another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/24\/bangladesh-holds-international-conference-on-rohingya-heres-what-to-know\">similar summit<\/a> in Cox\u2019s Bazar last month, to try to bring attention back to the plight of the Rohingya in Myanmar and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangladesh is a victim of the crisis,\u201d said Yunus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are forced to bear huge financial, social and environmental costs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs funding declines, the only peaceful option is to begin their repatriation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rohingya have consistently pronounced their desire to go back home\u201d, he said, adding that \u201cas an immediate step, those who recently crossed into Bangladesh escaping conflict must be allowed to repatriate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Yunus also told the meeting that, unlike Thailand, Bangladesh could not offer work rights to Rohingya, given his own country\u2019s \u201cdevelopmental challenges, including unemployment and poverty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Harder, the United States special envoy for best future generations, was among several speakers to thank Bangladesh and Thailand for hosting Rohingya refugees.<\/p>\n<p>He also announced that the US would \u201cprovide more than $60m in assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh\u201d, which he said would be tied to Bangladesh making \u201cmeaningful\u201d changes to allow access to work.<\/p>\n<p>But funding refugees in Bangladesh was \u201cnot a burden the United States will bear indefinitely\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is long past time for other governments and actors in the region to develop sustainable solutions for Rohingya,\u201d Harder said.<\/p>\n<p>About 50 other UN member states also addressed the meeting on Tuesday, although few announced specific measures they were taking, aside from the United Kingdom, which announced $36m in aid for Rohingya refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Dawda Jallow, The Gambia\u2019s minister of justice, also addressed the meeting, saying that his country hopes to see a judgement from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/7\/22\/un-court-rules-myanmar-genocide-case-can-go-ahead\">International Court of Justice (ICJ)<\/a> \u201csoon after\u201d an oral hearing scheduled for January next year on its case accusing Myanmar of perpetrating genocide against its Rohingya population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe filed our case in November 2019, almost six years ago. Now, we are preparing for the oral hearing on the merits in this case, which the court has scheduled for mid-January 2026,\u201d Jallow said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Gambia will present its case as to why Myanmar is responsible for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/6\/26\/rohingya-genocide-intensifying-as-war-rages-in-myanmars-rakhine-brouk\">Rohingya genocide<\/a> and must make reparations to its victims,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York \u2013 Members of the Rohingya community who fled violence in Myanmar have addressed a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) conference seeking to bring attention to the suffering of the persecuted Muslim minority, as fighting continues in Myanmar\u2019s Rakhine state.
