Or are there more pitfalls ahead?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-did-hamas-respond-exactly\">How did Hamas respond exactly?<\/h2>\n<p>Hamas has said that it has agreed to release all Israeli captives held in Gaza, both dead and alive, \u201cin a manner that achieves\u201d an end to Israel\u2019s war and a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>It also said that it would hand over power in Gaza to a body of Palestinian technocrats.<\/p>\n<p>On the rest of Trump\u2019s 20-point plan, which included the disarmament of Hamas, the group said that it should be \u201cdiscussed within a comprehensive Palestinian national framework, in which Hamas will be included and will contribute with full responsibility\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"has-trump-responded-positively\">Has Trump responded positively?<\/h2>\n<p>Trump has welcomed the Hamas response, and wrote on his Truth Social site that he believes the Palestinian group are \u201cready for a lasting PEACE\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a major announcement, he also said that \u201cIsrael must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza\u201d so that the captives could be released.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Trump then released a video message reiterating that he considered Hamas\u2019s response a win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a big day. We\u2019ll see how it all turns out. We have to get the final word down in concrete,\u201d he said. \u201cI just want to let you know that this is a very special day\u2026 Everyone was unified in wanting this war to end and seeing peace in the Middle East, and we\u2019re very close to achieving that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-israel-s-position\">What is Israel\u2019s position?<\/h2>\n<p>Trump announced his Gaza peace plan on Monday, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/30\/have-trump-and-netanyahu-really-agreed-on-a-gaza-peace-plan-key-takeaways\">said at the time<\/a> that he supported Trump\u2019s plan, because \u2013 he said \u2013 it would achieve Israel\u2019s war aims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will bring back to Israel all our hostages, dismantle Hamas\u2019s military capabilities and its political rule, and ensure that Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel,\u201d Netanyahu said.<\/p>\n<p>But the prime minister also had some caveats. In the White House, Netanyahu noted that if Hamas rejected the plan, \u201cor if they supposedly accept it and then basically do everything to counter it\u201d, Israel would \u201cfinish the job by itself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And a few hours later, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/30\/analysis-how-happy-is-israels-netanyahu-with-trumps-gaza-plan\">speaking in Hebrew<\/a> to a domestic Israeli audience, Netanyahu said that he had not agreed to a Palestinian state, and promised that the Israeli military would stay in most of Gaza.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-will-be-the-main-sticking-points\">What will be the main sticking points?<\/h2>\n<p>Hamas has made it clear that it is not willing to accept several aspects of Trump\u2019s plan, including an interim administration led by Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will never accept anyone who is not Palestinian to control the Palestinians,\u201d Hamas senior official Mousa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera, adding that the appointment of Blair was particularly unwelcome because of his past involvement in the invasion of Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The topic of disarmament will also be problematic. Trump and Netanyahu say the group must immediately lay down its arms, but Hamas has only said that it is willing to discuss the topic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamas\u2019s statement says that the future of Gaza \u2013 the future of the whole struggle \u2013 will be left to Palestinian consensus,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Ali Hashem. \u201cThey want a broader Palestinian consensus to reach a final answer. So, what\u2019s clear is that Hamas said, \u2018Yes \u2013 but \u2026&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"will-israel-really-stop-bombing-gaza\">Will Israel really stop bombing Gaza?<\/h2>\n<p>The Israeli government is likely to be unhappy with Trump\u2019s positive reaction because Hamas has not simply agreed to all its demands. It is already being reported, according to Axios reporter Barak Ravid, that Netanyahu was \u201csurprised\u201d at Trump\u2019s response, and viewed Hamas\u2019s answer as a \u201crejection\u201d of the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s government is dominated by the far-right, who have warned that they will bring down the prime minister if he agrees to a deal that they do not like. For its part, the Israeli opposition has indicated that it supports the deal, but a lack of trust between them and Netanyahu means that a coalition between them will be difficult to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Much will now come down to how far Trump is willing to twist Netanyahu\u2019s arm and force him to agree to a deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can imagine the forces gathering here in Washington, DC, right now, attempting to change Donald Trump\u2019s mind,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Shihab Rattansi, reporting from Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this now depends on how committed he is and how much pressure the mediators \u2026 are putting on him to keep to the terms of this agreement [and] not, as in the past, allow Hamas to live up to the agreement and allow Israel to resume the war again,\u201d Rattansi added.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Israel is continuing to bomb Gaza, with a particular focus on Gaza City.
