REUTERS\/Jim Vondruska\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4012305\">Demonstrators shout to law enforcement officers during a standoff with ICE and federal officers in the Little Village neighbourhood of Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday [Jim Vondruska\/Reuters]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have also used physical force, chemical munitions and rubber bullets to try to quash protests that have emerged in response to the immigration raids.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a\u00a0federal judge temporarily blocked a similar move from the Trump administration to deploy National Guard troops from California to the northwestern state of Oregon, and its capital, Portland, late on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Oregon\u2019s Attorney General Dan Rayfield <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/5\/gov-newsom-says-trump-is-sending-california-national-guard-troops-to-oregon\">had announced<\/a> shortly beforehand that the states of Oregon and California were launching the new joint legal challenge to what he called \u201cthe unlawful deployment of California National Guard troops to Oregon\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The two West Coast states had originally requested a narrower order that would have blocked only California National Guard troops from being sent to Oregon, but asked for the order to be expanded to National Guard troops being sent from any other state to Oregon, after the news that Texas National Guard personnel were also being activated.<\/p>\n<p>Describing the reasons for the new legal action on Sunday, Rayfield said Oregon \u201cwill absolutely not be a party to the president\u2019s attempt to normalise the use of the United States military in our American cities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Trump told a gathering of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/30\/key-takeaways-from-trumps-speech-to-us-military-generals\">US military generals<\/a> that he expects the US military to help respond to the \u201cenemy from within \u2026 before it gets out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas governor applauds move to deploy 400 National Guard members from his state to Illinois, Oregon and other states.
