The two sides discussed ways to improve trade ties, while Modi raised concerns about India\u2019s burgeoning bilateral trade deficit.<\/p>\n<p>India and China\u2019s foreign ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the Shanghai-Delhi flights.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s largest carrier, IndiGo, previously announced it would start daily nonstop flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou.<\/p>\n<p>State-backed Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport said at the time of the IndiGo announcement that it would encourage airlines to open more direct routes, such as between Guangzhou and Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>Direct flights between the two countries were suspended during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and did not resume after deadly clashes along their Himalayan border led to a prolonged <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/10\/22\/how-india-and-china-pulled-back-from-a-border-war-and-why\">military stand-off<\/a> later that year.<\/p>\n<p>Four Chinese soldiers and 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the worst violence between the neighbours in decades.<\/p>\n<p>India and China\u2019s diplomatic thaw comes amid US President Donald Trump\u2019s increasingly belligerent trade polices.<\/p>\n<p>The US president raised the tariff rate on Indian imports to a stiff 50 percent in September, citing the nation\u2019s continuing purchases of Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p>He also urged the European Union <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/9\/10\/trump-pushing-eu-to-slap-100-tariffs-on-china-india-reports-say\">to impose 100 percent tariffs<\/a> on China and India, ostensibly as part of his efforts to pressure Moscow to end its war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commercial flights between the countries to restart as diplomatic thaw eases tensions over border clashes.
