During a White House meeting with Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a>, President Donald Trump expanded on his oft-repeated boast about ending multiple wars and made an even bolder assertion: That no president had solved even one war before him.<\/p>\n

Trump said on October 17 that people tell him, \u201c\u2018Sir, if you solve one more, you\u2019re going to be known as a peacekeeper.\u2019 So to the best of my knowledge, we\u2019ve never had a president that solved one war, not one war. (George W) Bush started a war (in Iraq). A lot of them start wars, but they don\u2019t solve the wars. They don\u2019t settle them, and especially when they\u2019re not, when they have nothing to do with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US president is ignoring at least two instances of presidents personally overseeing negotiations that ended other countries\u2019 wars, plus several others in which presidents\u2019 designated diplomats successfully reached peace agreements following negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike a lot of Trump\u2019s statements, it massively exaggerates what he\u2019s done, while ignoring any history of what other presidents have done,\u201d said David Silbey, a Cornell University military historian.<\/p>\n

For our analysis, we did not count wars that the United States participated in militarily and won, such as World War II. Trump said he was focusing on wars that \u201chave nothing to do with us\u201d, and none of the eight wars he claims to have ended have primarily involved the US as a combatant.<\/p>\n

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told PolitiFact that Trump\u2019s \u201cdirect involvement in major conflicts, leveraging tools from America\u2019s military might to our superior consumer market, has brought peace to decades-long wars around the world in a fashion unlike any of his predecessors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which wars have been settled by US presidents?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Japan\u00a0became\u00a0the first modern Asian power to defeat a European power in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 and 1905. President Theodore Roosevelt helped mediate a settlement at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1905. Roosevelt was awarded the 1906\u00a0Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>\u00a0for his role in ending the war.<\/p>\n

By the time President Jimmy Carter\u00a0brought\u00a0Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to the White House to sign the\u00a0Camp David Accords on September 17, 1978, Israel and Egypt had been at war for three decades, alternating between periods of hot and cold war. The agreement was the fruit of negotiations conducted at the presidential retreat, Camp David. Sadat and Begin won the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n

Which wars were settled by US diplomats on a president\u2019s watch?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Bosnian War<\/h3>\n

On November 21, 1995, the presidents of Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia reached an agreement for peace in Dayton, Ohio, ending the Bosnian War, which began in 1992. The primary US officials involved in the negotiations over the Dayton Accords<\/a> were veteran diplomat Richard Holbrooke and Secretary of State Warren Christopher, along with leaders from Europe and Russia. The US president at the time was Bill Clinton.<\/p>\n

Northern Ireland\u2019s \u2018Troubles\u2019<\/h3>\n

The sectarian violence between Protestants and Catholics \u2013 known as \u201cthe Troubles\u201d \u2013 in the United Kingdom-administered Northern Ireland persisted for roughly three decades before the 1998 Good Friday Agreement<\/a>, also known as the Belfast Agreement.<\/p>\n

Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell spearheaded it, and it followed shuttle diplomacy \u2013 when an intermediary carries out a negotiation by traveling back and forth between the disputing parties \u2013 between Washington and Belfast. Clinton was also the president at the time.<\/p>\n

Civil war in Sudan<\/h3>\n

Fighting between the government of Sudan and the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement, based in southern Sudan, ended in 2005 with the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement, thanks to negotiations overseen by US Secretary of State Colin Powell. George W Bush was president at the time of the 2005 agreement. In 2011, a referendum led to the creation of a new country, South Sudan.<\/p>\n

What has Trump previously said about settling multiple wars?<\/h2>\n

Trump\u00a0has\u00a0often\u00a0repeated\u00a0the exaggerated claim that he\u2019s ended six, seven or eight wars.<\/p>\n

Trump had a hand in ceasefires that recently eased conflicts between Israel and Iran, India and Pakistan, and Armenia and Azerbaijan. But these were mostly incremental accords without a strong likelihood of long-term peace. Some leaders also dispute the extent of Trump\u2019s role.<\/p>\n

The US was involved in a temporary peace deal<\/a> between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, but violence in the region has continued, with hundreds of civilians killed since the deal\u2019s June signing. After Trump helped broker a deal between Cambodia and Thailand, the countries accused each other of ceasefire violations.<\/p>\n

A long-running standoff between Egypt and Ethiopia over an Ethiopian dam on the Nile River remains unresolved. In the case of Kosovo and Serbia, there is little evidence a potential war was brewing.<\/p>\n

Most recently, Trump has made notable progress by securing an agreement<\/a> to end the Israel\u2019s war on Gaza<\/a>. The agreement involves multiple stages, so it will take time to see if peace holds.<\/p>\n

For weeks, Trump has cited his diplomatic activity as being worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone says that I should get the Nobel Peace Prize for each one of these achievements,\u201d Trump said during a September 23 speech<\/a>\u00a0at the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The Norwegian Nobel Committee\u00a0awarded<\/a> Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado with the prize on October 10 for her \u201ctireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said, \u201cWe\u2019ve never had a president that solved one war, not one war.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least two US presidents \u2013 Roosevelt and Carter \u2013 personally conducted negotiations that led to peace agreements, both of which resulted in Nobel Prizes for some of the participants.<\/p>\n

Several other presidents saw peace agreements hammered out on their watch by officials they appointed.<\/p>\n
