He later required surgery.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happened-to-the-soldiers\">What happened to the soldiers?<\/h2>\n<p>At least nine soldiers were detained in connection with the man\u2019s rape. All but five were released relatively quickly.<\/p>\n<p>In February, the remaining soldiers were indicted for \u201cseverely abusing\u201d the detainee, but not raping him. The trial is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>A United Nations commission, reviewing the change of indictment and other instances of Israel\u2019s use of sexual and gender-based violence, determined that the decision to downgrade the indictments, despite the evidence, \u201cwill inevitably result in a more lenient punishment\u201d if there is a conviction.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-weren-t-israeli-politicians-calling-for-accountability\">Why weren\u2019t Israeli politicians calling for accountability?<\/h2>\n<p>Because they determined that doing so was somehow unpatriotic.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/8\/9\/everything-is-legitimate-israeli-leaders-defend-soldiers-accused-of-rape\">number<\/a> of Israel\u2019s far-right politicians, including Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, were among those who stormed the Sde Teiman prison in protest at the arrest of the soldiers for rape.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s hard-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir appeared to address Tomer-Yerushalmi directly in July 2024, writing in Hebrew, \u201cThe Military Advocate General, take your hands off the reservists!\u201d he said, referring to the soldiers accused of rape.<\/p>\n<p>Ben-Gvir\u2019s fellow traveller on the far-right, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, was equally active on social media at the time, writing that the alleged rapists should be treated like \u201cheroes, not villains\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3734707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3734707\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AFP__20250526__487Q6VP__v1__HighRes__IsraelPalestinianConflictJerusalemDay-1748310111.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513&#038;quality=80\" alt=\"a man in a suit smiles in a crowd\" fetchpriority=\"low\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3734707\">Israeli minister of National Security and far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir called upon Major-General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi to halt her investigation into the soldiers accused of rape ([Ahmad Gharabli\/AFP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Returning to social media during the furore following the rape, Smotrich chose to ignore the credible accusations of rape and instead called for \u201can immediate criminal investigation to locate the leakers of the trending video that was intended to harm the reservists and that caused tremendous damage to Israel in the world, and to exhaust the full severity of the law against them\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3>How have the critics reacted to Tomer-Yerushalmi\u2019s resignation?<\/h3>\n<p>Many of the loudest voices in defending the alleged rapists were equally vocal in welcoming the resignation of the woman responsible for sharing evidence of that rape.<\/p>\n<p>Writing on social media hours after Tomer-Yerushalmi\u2019s resignation, Smotrich accused her and much of Israel\u2019s judicial system of rank corruption, as well as launching what he called an \u201canti-Semitic blood libel\u201d against their military.<\/p>\n<p>Ben-Gvir was no less critical of Israel\u2019s judicial system in the leaking of the footage, writing: \u201cAll those involved in the affair must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both ministers are active supporters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s ongoing attempts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/4\/1\/a-coup-detat-israels-netanyahu-pushes-ahead-with-his-judicial-changes\">weaken the judiciary<\/a> and reduce its political oversight.<\/p>\n<h3>Have other crimes been committed at Sde Teiman against Palestinians?<\/h3>\n<p>At least 135 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/18\/what-we-know-about-the-torture-abuse-of-palestinian-prisoners-by-israel\">mutilated bodies<\/a> returned to Palestinian officials in Gaza by Israel last week as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal, had been held at Sde Teiman, documents that accompanied each corpse showed.<\/p>\n<p>Several of the bodies had been left with blindfolds on, and some had their hands still tied behind their back.
