The president was offended,\u201d the prime minister said of the advertisement, which was produced by the Canadian province of Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the one who\u2019s responsible, in my role as prime minister, for our relationship with the president of the United States, and the federal government is responsible for the foreign relationship with the US government,\u201d Carney added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, things happen \u2013 we take the good with the bad \u2013 and I apologised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US-Canada relationship has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/12\/closest-target-why-is-donald-trump-so-focused-on-canada\">deteriorated<\/a> over the past year amid Trump\u2019s global tariffs push, which saw him impose steep duties on his country\u2019s northern neighbour.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s commercial, which featured a 1980s speech by former US President Ronald Reagan in which Reagan said tariffs can lead to \u201cfierce trade wars\u201d and unemployment, worsened that already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/10\/7\/canadas-carney-makes-second-white-house-visit-as-trade-tensions-loom\">tense situation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration suspended trade talks with Canada over the advertisement, which Washington has claimed misrepresented Reagan\u2019s views and sought to unfairly influence a looming US Supreme Court decision on Trump\u2019s tariff policy.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, the US government also announced an additional <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/25\/trump-announces-additional-10-percent-canada-tariff-over-reagan-ad-brouhaha\">10 percent levy<\/a> on Canadian goods after the commercial was not immediately pulled from broadcasts in the US.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Trump told reporters that he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/10\/31\/trump-says-us-canada-will-not-restart-trade-talks\">did not plan to resume<\/a> trade negotiations with Canada despite getting an apology from Carney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a very good relationship, I like him a lot \u2013 but you know, what they did was wrong,\u201d the US president said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [Carney] was very nice, he apologised for what they did with the commercial because it was a false commercial.
