Both had declared victory ahead of the release of the provisional results.<\/p>\n<p>But the main opposition PAIGC party was barred from presenting a presidential candidate, raising criticism from civil society groups, which said the election was illegitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbing themselves the \u201cHigh Military Command for the Restoration of Order\u201d, the military officers read out a statement on television on Wednesday, declaring that they had ordered the immediate suspension of the electoral process \u201cuntil further notice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also ordered the closure of Guinea-Bissau\u2019s borders and an overnight curfew.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, General Horta Inta-A was sworn in as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/11\/27\/guinea-bissau-military-appoints-general-as-transition-president-after-coup\">country\u2019s transitional president<\/a>, defending the military takeover by saying that there had been \u201csufficient [evidence] to justify the operation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But the coup \u2013 one of several to hit Guinea-Bissau since the country gained independence from Portugal in 1974 \u2013 has spurred widespread concern, including from regional bodies.<\/p>\n<p>The chairperson of the African Union Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/_AfricanUnion\/status\/1994021010081714438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a> the situation earlier on Thursday, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Embalo and all other detained officials.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also urged \u201call parties to exercise the utmost restraint in order to prevent any further deterioration of the situation\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senegal\u2019s Foreign Ministry says Umaro Sissoco Embalo arrived in the country a day after he was deposed in a military coup.
