and Associated Press news agencies are reporting, days after he was deposed in a military coup.<\/p>\n<p>Califa Soares Cassama, Embalo\u2019s chief of staff, confirmed to AP that the former president Brazzaville.<\/p>\n<p>Embalo had initially sought refuge in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/11\/27\/guinea-bissaus-deposed-president-embalo-arrives-in-senegal-after-coup\">neighbouring Senegal<\/a> after a group of military officers on Wednesday announced that they had taken \u201cfull control\u201d of Guinea-Bissau ahead of the release of provisional presidential election results.<\/p>\n<p>The true motives for the coup remain unclear, with speculation and conspiracy theories circulating, including that it was carried out with Embalo\u2019s blessing.<\/p>\n<p>The coup has sparked a wave of international condemnation, with regional leaders and the United Nations calling on Guinea-Bissau\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/11\/28\/guinea-bissaus-new-military-ruler-moves-to-consolidate-power-after-coup\">new military leaders<\/a> to restore constitutional order and allow the electoral process to complete its work.<\/p>\n<p>Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko condemned the events as a \u201csham\u201d in remarks to lawmakers on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the electoral process to continue,\u201d Sonko said. \u201cThe [electoral] commission must be able to declare the winner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of Guinea-Bissau\u2019s new military leaders are close to Embalo, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/11\/27\/guinea-bissau-military-appoints-general-as-transition-president-after-coup\">General Horta Inta-A<\/a>, who was named as the transitional president earlier this week, and Ilidio Vieira Te, who was appointed prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Te had previously served as finance minister in Embalo\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Inta-a appointed a 28-member government, most of whom are allies of the deposed president.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the country\u2019s main opposition party, PAIGC, said in a statement that its headquarters had been \u201cillegally invaded by heavily armed militia groups\u201d in the capital, Bissau.<\/p>\n<p>The party denounced the raid on Saturday as \u201can attack on stability, democracy and the rule of law\u201d in Guinea-Bissau.<\/p>\n<p>PAIGC had been barred from presenting a presidential candidate in last <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/11\/23\/guinea-bissau-beset-by-coups-votes-in-contentious-presidential-election\">Sunday\u2019s election<\/a>, a move that drew criticism from civil rights groups who denounced an apparent crackdown on the opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Both Embalo and his main challenger, Fernando Dias, had declared victory ahead of the release of the provisional vote
