data-end=\"438\">North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that his country\u2019s ties with Russia had been strengthened through \u201csharing blood, life and death in the same trench\u201d in the Ukraine war, as he sent a New Year\u2019s greeting to Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"222\" data-end=\"438\">Kim\u2019s message followed President Putin\u2019s own New Year\u2019s greeting to the North Korean leader on December 18, which praised the \u201cheroic\u201d role played by Pyongyang\u2019s troops in Russia\u2019s western Kursk region and \u201cclearly proved the Saturday, Kim said 2025 was a \u201creally meaningful year\u201d for bilateral ties, and called relations between Moscow and Pyongyang a \u201cprecious common asset to be carried forward forever not only in the present era but also by posterity generation after generation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow no one can break the relations between the peoples of the two countries and their unity,\u201d Kim said, according to South Korea\u2019s Yonhap news agency.<\/p>\n<p>South Korean and Western intelligence agencies say North Korea deployed thousands of troops to support Moscow in its war against Russia\u2019s military campaign against Ukraine and that its soldiers had been killed in combat.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Kim acknowledged that North Korean troops were sent to clear landmines in Russia\u2019s Kursk region in August 2025, following a Ukrainian incursion, and that at least nine soldiers from an engineering regiment were killed during the 120-day deployment.<\/p>\n<p>Kim\u2019s New Year message to Putin was sent a day after he instructed his officials to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/12\/26\/north-koreas-kim-jong-un-pushes-more-missile-production-as-war-deterrent\">increase missile production and build more factories to produce munitions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>North Korea has also stepped up missile testing in recent years, which analysts say is aimed at improving the accuracy of its arsenal of short-, medium- and long-range rockets in order to deter what Kim sees as threats from the United States and South Korea.
