But all \u2060are in the dark about how the reset will play out when going wheel-to-wheel on race day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m certainly more comfortable now than I was a couple of months ago with how to drive these cars and how to try and get the most out of them,\u201d McLaren\u2019s Oscar Piastri told reporters on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think there\u2019s still the saying of \u2018You don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australian Piastri said McLaren \u200cthought they had the cars worked out two months ago, only to find they had \u201ca whole bunch of stuff\u201d they did not understand during winter testing.<\/p>\n<p>With more power generated by electricity than last year\u2019s engines, there is more emphasis on drivers needing to be tactical with energy deployment and regeneration.<\/p>\n<p>The old drag reduction system has been replaced by a new overtake mode, giving extra power for overtaking.<\/p>\n<p>Four-time world champion Max Verstappen described the changes as \u201clike Formula E on steroids\u201d and \u201canti-racing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Formula One Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali defended them and assured fans there will still be plenty of thrills.<\/p>\n<p>The changes may have different effects at \u2060different circuits, leaving all teams to learn on the fly, week by week.<\/p>\n<p>Piastri said Sunday\u2019s race \u2060at Albert Park, a suburb of Melbourne, would probably showcase the more \u201cunnatural\u201d parts of driving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, a lot more lift and coast, a lot more kind of just driving to maximise the power unit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got power units that are reducing in power down the straights at different points. And there\u2019s a lot of unknowns, \u2060a lot of challenges in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new regulations raised hopes of a more open championship and the prospect of a disruptor team emerging to force change at the top. But preseason testing in \u2060Bahrain hinted at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/sports\/2025\/12\/3\/verstappen-norris-piastri-f1-set-for-three-way-title-fight-in-abu-dhabi\">familiar top four<\/a>, with Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull and \u2060McLaren all performing well.<\/p>\n<p>Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley said the gap between the \u201cbest and the rest\u201d might only widen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s going to be a very different year in terms of the competitiveness in the sport,\u201d he told the Reuters news agency. \u201cWe\u2019re already seeing the gap between the fastest teams and the slowest teams but larger than it\u2019s been \u200cin the last few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the pecking order, F1 race tracks will be more crowded with the addition of the new Cadillac team although there may be more breathing room at Albert Park, given Aston Martin\u2019s preseason troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the technical guidance of Adrian \u200cNewey, \u200cwho joined from Red Bull, the Honda-powered team completed few laps during winter testing and have reliability problems.<\/p>\n<p>The AMR26 cars will be in Australia \u2013 something of a relief for F1 management \u2013 but may only race for a few laps before retiring.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F1\u2019s technical changes pose challenges for drivers and engineers alike while raising concerns about the quality of racing.
