Why Moscow, Beijing are keeping their distance<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 3 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/3\/5\/our-children-were-sold-off-the-south-africans-sent-to-fight-russias-war\">\u2018Our children were sold off\u2019: The South Africans sent to fight Russia\u2019s war<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>\u201cToday, 200 Ukrainian families received the most-awaited message \u2013 their loved ones are coming home,\u201d Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this is always good news for all of us, for the entire country: the return of our people to their homeland,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/2029536762473668697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added Zelenskyy<\/a>, thanking the United States \u201cfor its support in making this exchange possible\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Video footage shared by Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets showed servicemen leaving buses, wrapped in Ukrainian flags and shouting \u201cGlory to Ukraine!\u201d, before embracing loved ones who came to welcome them.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian Defence Ministry also published footage showing its soldiers boarding a bus and cheering while draped in Russian flags.<\/p>\n<p>Kyiv and Moscow have carried out regular POW exchanges throughout the war, which hit the four-year mark in February.<\/p>\n<p>United States-brokered negotiations to end the conflict have stalled despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/2\/18\/russia-ukraine-talks-to-resume-in-geneva-as-us-claims-meaningful-progress\">recent rounds of talks<\/a> in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>Territory has been a major sticking point, with Russia insisting that Ukraine give up the remaining 20 percent of the eastern region of Donetsk that Russian forces have failed to capture \u2013 a demand rejected by Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine also has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/26\/ukraines-security-guarantees-what-are-they-and-why-might-they-fall-short\">demanded security guarantees<\/a> from its Western allies to prevent any other Russian attack should an agreement to end the war be reached.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump expressed frustration with his Ukrainian counterpart in an interview with Politico on Thursday, telling the US news outlet that Zelenskyy \u201chas to get on the ball, and he has to get a deal done\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also told Politico that he thinks Russian President Vladimir Putin is \u201cready to make a deal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Observers have criticised Trump for appearing to apply more pressure on Ukraine than on Russia to make concessions to reach an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZelenskyyUa\/status\/2029630599338873211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a social media post<\/a> later on Thursday, Zelenskyy said Kyiv\u2019s priority \u201cis to do everything to end the war\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue the diplomatic process when our American partners are ready to work as we agreed \u2013 bilateral formats with them, trilateral formats with Russia, as well as work with the Europeans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exchange comes amid a deadlock in US-brokered negotiations to end the four-year war between the two countries.
