He demanded that the country\u2019s legal system drop the case against Bolsonaro and accused Brazil of persecuting right-wing voices.<\/p>\n<p>After Trump met Lula at the United Nations General Assembly in September and again at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/26\/trump-meets-brazils-lula-at-asean-summit-touts-pretty-good-deals\">a summit<\/a> for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in October, relations between the two leaders improved.<\/p>\n<p>Lula also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/10\/6\/lula-asks-trump-to-lift-40-percent-tariff-from-brazilian-goods\">reached out<\/a> by telephone in October in a bid to ease the cumulative 50-percent tariffs on certain Brazilian products. On November 20, Trump responded by issuing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/11\/modifying-the-scope-of-tariffs-on-the-government-of-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">executive order<\/a> \u201cmodifying the scope of tariffs\u201d on Brazilian exports like beef and coffee.<\/p>\n<p>But speculation has remained high that Trump could again intervene in the country\u2019s domestic politics to boost the prospects of the Brazilian right.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil is set to hold a new presidential election in October, where Lula is facing off against Bolsonaro\u2019s eldest son, Flavio.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for the imprisoned Bolsonaro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/10\/brazils-jair-bolsonaro-seeks-court-approval-for-visit-from-trump-official\">had asked<\/a> the Brazilian Supreme Court to approve a visitation request from Beattie this week, but the court rejected that request on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Beattie, a strong critic of Lula\u2019s government, was fired during Trump\u2019s first term in office following reports that he had attended a white nationalist conference.<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro, meanwhile, was placed in intensive care on Friday, with hospital officials saying the 70-year-old had a \u201chigh fever, a drop in oxygen saturation, sweating and chills\u201d linked to pneumonia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says Darren Beattie was \u2018prohibited from visiting\u2019 Bolsonaro in prison.
