I support Palestine Action.\u201d<\/p>\n<section>\n<h2>Recommended Stories <\/h2>\n<p><span>list of 3 items<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>list 1 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/25\/palestine-action-hunger-strikers-to-sue-prisons-over-alleged-mistreatment\">\u2018Keffiyehs seized, left to die\u2019: Inside the Palestine Action hunger strike<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 2 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/26\/in-u-turn-uk-police-say-palestine-action-protesters-will-be-arrested-again\">In U-turn, UK police say Palestine Action protesters will be arrested again<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 3 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/28\/hundreds-of-thousands-march-through-london-in-stand-against-the-far-right\">\u2018Far right won\u2019t take over our streets\u2019: Huge crowds march through London<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Officers made the arrests under \u201cterrorism\u201d legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Following the High Court\u2019s ruling in February that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/2\/13\/uk-decision-to-ban-palestine-action-as-terror-group-unlawful-court-says\">banning<\/a> Palestine Action as a \u201cterrorist group\u201d was unlawful, the force had said it would adopt a \u201cproportionate approach\u201d and stop arresting the group\u2019s supporters and focus instead on gathering evidence.<\/p>\n<p>But on Wednesday, Deputy Assistant Commissioner James Harman said that since any \u201cimpact of that judgement will not take effect until the government\u2019s appeal has been considered, which could take many months\u201d, it would resume arrests. \u201cWe must enforce the law as it is at the time, not as it might be at a future date,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As she was led away by two officers on Saturday, one woman, in footage posted to social media, can be heard saying: \u201cI\u2019m being arrested for holding a cardboard sign, whereas our government feels the need to sell weapons and use our airbases to commit genocide in Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critics say the Met\u2019s U-turn defies the court ruling.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/podcasts\/2026\/2\/17\/the-take-she-took-on-britains-palestine-action-ban-then-she-won\">Palestine Action<\/a> is a direct action campaign group which has targeted weapons manufacturers linked to Israel and an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/20\/pro-palestinian-activists-break-into-uk-military-base\">RAF base<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The government <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/26\/in-u-turn-uk-police-say-palestine-action-protesters-will-be-arrested-again\">proscribed<\/a> it as a \u201cterrorist organisation\u201d in July 2025, placing it alongside groups including al-Qaeda and Hezbollah. The High Court called the move \u201cdisproportionate\u201d and in breach of freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>The government was granted a stay pending an appeal, meaning the ban technically remains in force.<\/p>\n<p>Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShabanaMahmood\/status\/2022261449909817591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> she would fight the High Court ruling in the Court of Appeal, said in February that supporting Palestine Action was not the same as supporting the Palestinian cause.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring has since ordered that hundreds of related prosecutions be paused until after that appeal is heard.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 3,000 people have been arrested for holding signs in support of the group, contributing to a 660 percent rise in UK \u201cterrorism\u201d arrests in the year to September 2025, Defend Our Juries said.<\/p>\n<p>On the day of the High Court ruling, about 150 people held the same placards outside the court and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/2\/13\/uk-court-says-palestine-action-ban-unlawful-what-does-the-verdict-mean\">not a single person<\/a> was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the crackdown has drawn sharp international criticism, including from the UN.<\/p>\n<p>When the ban was first imposed, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said it appeared \u201cdisproportionate and unnecessary\u201d, warning it risked criminalising the legitimate exercise of free expression.<\/p>\n<p>In January, US Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers told the news platform Semafor that \u201ccensoring that speech does more harm than good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International, which intervened in the court case, said thousands had been \u201carrested for something that should never have been a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eight activists linked to the group staged a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/25\/palestine-action-hunger-strikers-to-sue-prisons-over-alleged-mistreatment\"> lengthy hunger strike in prison<\/a>, with four held on remand for 15 months before being bailed in February. Four others remain imprisoned.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Al Jazeera reported that released detainees are now pursuing legal action against the prisons over alleged mistreatment.<\/p>\n<p>Defend Our Juries has called a mass sign-holding event, titled Everyone Day, at Trafalgar Square on April 11, as the government\u2019s appeal heads to court.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s arrests took place as the rest of the city was filled with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/28\/hundreds-of-thousands-march-through-london-in-stand-against-the-far-right\">demonstrators<\/a> who came out to march against the far right.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arrests come days after force announced U-turn, saying that despite High Court ruling, \u2018terror\u2019 ban remains in place.
