Dutch midfielder suffers suspected ACL injury in his right knee, ending his chances of playing in the FIFA World Cup.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tottenham Hotspur \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200cand Netherlands midfielder Xavi Simons says his \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060football season has \u201ccome to an abrupt end\u201d after suffering a serious knee injury that has ruled him out of the FIFA World Cup.<\/p>\n

Simons was injured on Saturday during Tottenham\u2019s 1-0 win \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060at Wolverhampton Wanderers and left the pitch on a stretcher in the 63rd minute. The club confirmed he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).<\/p>\n

\u201cXavi will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and, following that, will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team,\u201d Tottenham said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old was left clutching his right knee in pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say life can \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200cbe cruel and today it feels that way,\u201d he said in an Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy season has come to an abrupt end and I\u2019m just trying to process it. Honestly, I\u2019m heartbroken\u2026 All I\u2019ve wanted to do is fight for \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060my team and now the ability \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060to do that has been snatched away from me\u2026 along with the World Cup. Representing my country this summer\u2026 just gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simons was \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060expected to be an important player in Ronald Koeman\u2019s Netherlands squad for \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060what would have been his second \u2060\u2060\u2060\u2060World Cup after his debut in 2022. He has earned 34 caps, most recently in friendlies last month.<\/p>\n

The injury is \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200calso a major blow for Spurs during their difficult Premier League season, as the North London team \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200care \u200c\u200c\u200c\u200c18th on 34 points, two points away from relegation safety.<\/p>\n
