Trump casts his actions as necessary to improve domestic security and curb undocumented immigration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFIFA needs to act urgently to address the risks of human rights abuses for athletes, fans, and workers,\u201d HRW said. \u201cOne concrete thing it should do is work to persuade the Trump administration to establish an \u2018ICE Truce\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGianni Infantino (FIFA president) and his FIFA colleagues should use their leverage to demand that the Trump administration do \u200cwhat\u2019s right for the games,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoll back discriminatory travel bans, refrain from abusive immigration enforcement operations in and around World Cup venues, protect children\u2019s rights and commit to uphold freedom of assembly and speech.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idea is drawn from the \u201cOlympic Truce\u201d, a tradition dating back to ancient Greece, when warring city-states paused hostilities so athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FIFA 2026 World Cup will no doubt be one of the greatest and most spectacular events in the history of mankind, attracting millions of fans from around the world to 11 host cities across America,\u201d White House spokesman Davis Ingle told the Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be a monumental event that requires close coordination between the Trump Administration, FIFA, and all of our great federal, state, and local partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump is focused on ensuring that this is not \u2060only an incredible experience for all fans and visitors, but also the safest and most secure in history \u2013 and no amount of \u2060ridiculous scare tactics driven by liberal activist groups and the left-wing media will change that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerns intensified on Thursday when advocacy groups issued a travel advisory warning that visitors travelling to the US for the World Cup may face arbitrary detention or deportation, among other human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>Fans, players, journalists and other visitors may face racial profiling, searches of electronic devices, or risk of cruel or inhumane treatment if they end \u2060up in immigration detention facilities, according to the advisory.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s warnings followed a March statement from Amnesty International that the tournament is drifting far from the \u201csafe, free and inclusive\u201d event promised by FIFA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHS (US Department of Homeland Security) will work with our local and federal partners \u2060to secure 2026 FIFA World Cup \u2013 in line with federal law and the US Constitution \u2013 as we do with every \u2060major sporting event, while showcasing American greatness to the entire world,\u201d a DHS spokesperson told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission is simple: ensure every fan \u2013 Americans and visitors alike \u2013 has a safe and unforgettable experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternational visitors who legally come to the United States for the World Cup have nothing to worry about. What makes someone a target for immigration enforcement is whether or not they are illegally in the US \u2013 full stop. Speculation to the contrary \u200cis ill-informed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, foreign visitors MUST be proactive and should start working on their travel plans and documents well ahead of time to ensure a smooth travel experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HRW also said it had written to Infantino requesting details about the nominees, judges, terms of reference and selection process for FIFA\u2019s inaugural peace prize.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was awarded the prize in \u200cDecember \u200cfor what the world football\u2019s global governing body said were his efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalation in troubled hotspots around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy concocting this award, Infantino risks turning the 2026 FIFA World Cup \u2026 into yet another sportswashing event in a world that already has far too many,\u201d HRW added.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera has contacted FIFA for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ICE has represented the US immigration crackdown and deportation drive, but HRW wants a truce for duration of World Cup.
