CNN, citing two sources familiar with the matter, said Trump was unlikely to accept the proposal, reporting that lifting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/24\/how-long-can-iran-survive-the-uss-hormuz-blockade\">US blockade of Iranian ports<\/a> without resolving concerns over Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme would weaken Washington\u2019s leverage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1157\">The proposal comes amid uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran will not enter negotiations while the US maintains restrictions on Iranian ports. Washington and Tehran agreed to a temporary ceasefire on April 8 after more than a month of fighting that began with joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1450\" data-end=\"1707\">The truce, mediated by Pakistan, has since come under strain because of disputes over maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz and US measures targeting Iranian ports. A parallel conflict involving <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/27\/hezbollah-and-israel-swap-threats-and-strikes-across-lebanons-border\">Israel and Lebanon<\/a> has also added to regional tensions.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"iran-signals-openness-to-diplomacy\">Iran signals openness to diplomacy<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1748\" data-end=\"1911\">Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Monday and said Tehran was considering a US request to restart negotiations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"2019\">Araghchi said he welcomed engagement with Russia at the \u201chighest level\u201d at a time of regional instability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2021\" data-end=\"2241\">\u201cRecent events have evidenced the depth and strength of our strategic partnership,\u201d Araghchi wrote on X. \u201cAs our relationship continues to grow, we are grateful for solidarity and welcome Russia\u2019s support for diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2243\" data-end=\"2380\">Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera\u2019s Almigdad Alruhaid said Araghchi was expected to return to Iran after meetings with regional partners.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2382\" data-end=\"2564\">\u201cHe had travelled to Pakistan, Oman and Russia. We know there\u2019s a strategic partnership between Iran and these countries. We know Oman is Iran\u2019s traditional mediator,\u201d Alruhaid said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2737\">\u201cBut the Iranians are trying to say that they are open to diplomacy. They are sending messages. They are not closing any channels and not closing any doors for diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"calls-to-reopen-strait-of-hormuz\">Calls to reopen Strait of Hormuz<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2776\" data-end=\"2976\">Dozens of countries have called for the \u201curgent and unimpeded reopening\u201d of the Strait of Hormuz, while United Nations chief Antonio Guterres warned the standoff could trigger a global food emergency.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2978\" data-end=\"3130\">Reporting from the UN, New York, Al Jazeera\u2019s Kristen Saloomey said diplomats repeatedly appealed for de-escalation during a Security Council meeting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3132\" data-end=\"3301\">She said speakers highlighted the disruption caused by thousands of stranded cargo vessels and tens of thousands of maritime workers unable to move through the waterway.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3303\" data-end=\"3481\">Guterres also warned that shipping disruptions were hitting vulnerable countries hardest, with about 20 percent of global oil and natural gas supplies passing through the strait.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3483\" data-end=\"3687\">Bahrain, which requested the meeting with support from dozens of countries affected by higher fuel prices, described the closure as a violation of international law and called for attacks on ships to end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo action was taken by the Security Council \u2026 A past resolution that called for reopening the strait was blocked by China and Russia, with Moscow blaming the US and Israel for their \u2018unprovoked attack\u2019 on Iran as the source of the problem,\u201d Saloomey added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The White House confirms Trump met his national security advisers on Monday to discuss the plan.
