The operation will start on Monday, the US president says.<\/p>\n<p>Iran took control of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass, days after the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Trump\u2019s announcement, oil prices have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/5\/4\/oil-prices-flat-as-trumps-plan-for-strait-of-hormuz-fails-to-move-markets\">failed to ease<\/a> as the international benchmark Brent crude was essentially flat on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Trump, top Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi said any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/3\/trump-says-us-will-help-free-up-ships-stuck-in-hormuz-strait\">US interference<\/a> in the strait would be considered a violation of the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what we know as the conflict enters day 66:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"in-iran\">In Iran<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Responding to Trump\u2019s new naval operation, Iran\u2019s military said on Monday: \u201cAny foreign armed force, especially the aggressive US Army, will be attacked if they attempt to approach and enter the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On Sunday, Iran said it received a US response to its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/3\/whats-irans-14-point-proposal-to-end-the-war-and-will-trump-accept-it\">latest offer for peace talks<\/a> after Trump called Tehran\u2019s proposal \u201cunacceptable\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that US allies in the region are aware the US-Israeli war on Iran is not legal but rather a \u201cunilateral step\u201d that goes against international law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"diplomacy\">Diplomacy<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, have discussed the \u201cregional situation\u201d and \u201cPakistan\u2019s ongoing diplomatic efforts for peace and stability in the region\u201d in a phone call, Pakistan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on social media..<\/li>\n<li>After Trump accused NATO allies of not doing enough to support the US in the war on Iran, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Monday that European nations have \u201cgotten the message\u201d and are now ensuring that agreements on the use of military bases are being implemented.<\/li>\n<li>The leaders of Australia and Japan have agreed to step up cooperation on energy and critical minerals as the Iran war disrupts global trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"in-the-us\">In the US<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Talking about his latest mission for the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the US would start helping to free ships stranded in the Gulf by the US-Israeli war on Iran. Trump gave few details of the plan to aid ships and their crews that have been \u201clocked up\u201d in the vital waterway and are running low on food and other supplies more than two months after the conflict began.<\/li>\n<li>The unified command of Iran\u2019s armed forces responded by warning US forces to stay out of the strait. Its forces would \u201crespond harshly\u201d to any threat, it added, telling commercial ships and oil tankers to refrain from any movement in the absence of coordination with Iran\u2019s military.<\/li>\n<li>The US has evacuated 22 crew members held on board an Iranian container vessel to Pakistan and will hand them over to Iranian authorities on Monday, Pakistan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, calling the move a \u201cconfidence-building measure\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) says the maritime security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical due to ongoing military operations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"in-lebanon\">In Lebanon<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Israel has attacked at least eight locations in southern Lebanon. Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting Israel attacked Debaal, Qana, Srifa and Qalaouiyah as well as Zawtar al-Sharqiya, Toulin, Shehour and Braachit.
