They are saying they\u2019re going to respond and engage militarily. And in such a case, that will be the end of the ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Iranian military establishment and political officials here say that the war has changed many things. And that there is a new regime [in the Strait of Hormuz] and Iran in one way or another is going to keep control over the waterway,\u201d said Atas.<\/p>\n<p>The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the maritime security threat level in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical on Monday due to ongoing military operations.<\/p>\n<p>The agency advised mariners to consider routing via Oman territorial waters where the US has \u201cestablished an enhanced security area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the UKMTO said a tanker off the coast of Fujairah in the UAE was \u201chit by unknown projectiles\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll crew are reported safe. No environmental impact reported,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dangerous-escalation\">Dangerous escalation<\/h2>\n<p>Iran has been blocking nearly all shipping from the Gulf, other than its own, for more than two months, sending global energy prices soaring.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, petrol has risen to an average of $4.44 per gallon, up from less than $3 before the war started,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/10\/inflation-rises-in-us-amid-iran-war-hormuz-blockade\">spurring inflation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had previously suggested that he is comfortable with the status quo of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/29\/trump-vows-to-maintain-iran-blockade-tehran-threaten-practical-action\">competing blockades<\/a> in the strait, arguing that the US siege was \u201cmore effective than bombing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, a US move to ease the Iranian blocking of the strait could alter the relative calm that had persisted against growing tensions in the past weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan Ullman, chairman of the Killowen Group and a former US naval officer, said Trump\u2019s latest plan could lead to a dangerous escalation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran has huge amounts of drones and small craft that could make this very, very difficult,\u201d Ullman told Al Jazeera. \u201cI would hate to see a confrontation where an American warship is hit, because then the Americans will have no other option except to retaliate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diplomacy\">Diplomacy<\/h2>\n<p>The tensions over control of the Hormuz Strait come after Iran submitted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/3\/whats-irans-14-point-proposal-to-end-the-war-and-will-trump-accept-it\">14-point proposal<\/a> to end the war, with Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei saying officials were currently reviewing a US counterproposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US message was received through Pakistan, and I will not discuss the details of the issues raised at this time because these issues are still under review,\u201d Baghaei told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>He said the US practice of making \u201cexcessive and unreasonable demands\u201d means the proposal \u201cis not easy to review\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Baghaei also responded to news reports about negotiations regarding Iran\u2019s nuclear programme, dismissing them as speculation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issues raised about enrichment or nuclear materials are purely speculative and, at this stage, we are not talking about anything other than stopping the war completely, and the direction we will take in the future will be determined in the future,\u201d Baghaei said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Iran\u2019s military has warned the United States Navy to stay out of the Strait of Hormuz after President Trump said the US will \u201chelp free up\u201d ships stuck in the strategic\u00a0waterway.
