It is not clear if a ransom was paid.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Sydney reported on Saturday that Canvas had been restored but was not yet \u201caccessible to staff or students, as we need to complete checks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s University of Alberta said Canvas was partially restored with \u201creduced functionality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The countries that have been affected include the United States, the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>According to Canvas, about 30 million people across the globe use its system. The breach reportedly targeted close to 9,000 institutions across the globe.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"breach-came-at-worst-time\">Breach came at \u2018worst time\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was \u201caware of a service disruption\u201d impacting a learning system, although it did not name Canvas, in a statement Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis disruption has impacted schools, educational institutions, and students across the country,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s correspondent in Florida, Phil Lavelle, said the hack could not have \u201ccome at a worse time\u201d as many US schools are in the middle of exam season.<\/p>\n<p>Institutions like Penn State, Harvard, Illinois, Columbia and Georgetown are all \u201cscrambling\u201d to extend or change exam deadlines, said Lavelle.<\/p>\n<p>The Harvard Crimson, a student newspaper, said it could not access the platform since Thursday, with the University of Cambridge also saying it had \u201ctemporarily suspended access\u201d to Canvas on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Reuters news agency reported that, on May 5, the group posted a message saying Instructure had \u201cnot even bothered speaking to us\u201d to prevent a data leak, and that their demand \u201cwas not even as high as you might think it is\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-are-shinyhunters\">Who are ShinyHunters?<\/h2>\n<p>The group is a global cybercrime syndicate that was established in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, they have claimed responsibility for cyberattacks, with the most recent data breach being Rockstar Games, a gaming giant that owns Grand Theft Auto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis goes to show how vulnerable schools are, how vulnerable other institutions are by individuals who seek to exploit or extort at the worst possible time \u2013 armed with just a keyboard and a mouse,\u201d said Lavelle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The hacker group, ShinyHunters, threatened to leak student data after breaching the educational platform Canvas.
