The post was previously held by al-Sharaa\u2019s brother Maher, an appointment that had drawn accusations of nepotism.<\/p>\n<section>\n<h2>Recommended Stories <\/h2>\n<p><span>list of 3 items<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>list 1 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/4\/29\/3-year-old-rescued-after-falling-into-18-metre-deep-well-in-syria\">3-year-old rescued after falling into 18-metre-deep well in Syria<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 2 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/29\/us-supreme-court-hears-haiti-syria-tps-case-with-wide-ranging-implications\">US Supreme Court hears Haiti, Syria TPS case with wide-ranging implications<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span>list 3 of 3<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/5\/2\/syria-becomes-alternative-energy-corridor-for-oil-as-hormuz-effectively-blo\">Syria becomes alternative energy corridor for oil as Hormuz effectively blo<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>end of list<\/span><\/section>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s reshuffle was the first since the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 and comes about a year and a half into the five-year transitional period set in Syria\u2019s constitutional declaration.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, presidential decrees appointed Khaled Zaarour as information minister, replacing Hamza Mustafa, who was moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bassel Sweidan, who heads a committee tasked with reaching settlements with business tycoons linked to the Assad-era elite, as agriculture minister.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Sharaa also replaced governors in the provinces of Homs, Quneitra and Deir Az Zor, the eastern province where most of Syria\u2019s oilfields are located.<\/p>\n<p>No official reason was given for the changes, but Al Jazeera\u2019s Resul Sardar Atas has previously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/30\/syrian-president-unveils-transitional-government\">reported<\/a> that after al-Sharaa announced his new government in March last year, his choice of officials was criticised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople had criticised the president that he had previously appointed all of his close friends to all of the ministerial positions,\u201d Atas said.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, protests and social media campaigns have emerged due to worsening economic conditions and what critics described as poor governance, suggesting another reason for al-Sharaa\u2019s cabinet reshuffle.<\/p>\n<p>Besides a government reshuffle, al-Sharaa\u2019s government since last month has begun <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/26\/syria-puts-al-assad-era-officials-on\">trials<\/a> of Assad-era officials after facing criticism over delays in launching a promised transitional justice process following Syria\u2019s 14-year war, in which an estimated half a million people were killed.<\/p>\n<p>On April 26, trial proceedings opened in Damascus for Atef Najib, the former head of political security in southern Syria\u2019s Deraa province.<\/p>\n<p>He has been accused of overseeing a violent crackdown on protesters there during the 2011 uprising, which set off the war, and faces charges related to \u201ccrimes against the Syrian people\u201d, according to SANA.<\/p>\n<p>Najib, who is a cousin of al-Assad, was the sole defendant in court for the preparatory session of the trial, which is set to continue this month.<\/p>\n<p>Charged in absentia are al-Assad and his brother Maher, former commander of the Syrian military\u2019s 4th Armoured Division.
