Our demand is legitimate: demanding an end to the war, lifting the [US] blockade [on Iranian ports] and piracy, and releasing Iranian assets that have been unjustly frozen in banks due to US pressure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and establishing security in the region and Lebanon were other demands of Iran, which are considered a generous and responsible offer for regional security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/5\/11\/aje-onl-nf_tv-pkg_trump-rejects-iran-response-110526\">made clear<\/a> in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday that he would reject Tehran\u2019s counterproposal although he did not offer details on its contents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have just read the response from Iran\u2019s so-called \u2018Representatives.\u2019 I don\u2019t like it \u2013 TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Dessi of the American University of Rome said the two sides appeared to be digging in on their respective positions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe news of Monday is rather negative news \u2026 because we are seeing both sides continuously stick to rather maximalist positions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in this impasse, the real casualty remains the international economy and the populations of the Gulf and the broader Middle East,\u201d the analyst added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"oil-prices-rise\">Oil prices rise<\/h2>\n<p>Trump\u2019s social media post unnerved global energy markets with the price of the international benchmark Brent crude rising 4.65 percent to $99.95 a barrel during Monday morning trade in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Oil contracts for the US benchmark West Texas intermediate also surged by just over 4 percent to $105.50 a barrel as investors braced for further disruptions to supplies through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>Baghaei also addressed plans by European countries to deploy warships to the region to ensure safe navigation of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran in effect has blocked since March.<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are heading a coalition of more than 50 countries they said will work to help enable the resumption of maritime transit in the region after the war.<\/p>\n<p>Baghaei said Iran had \u201cclearly said to the Europeans that they shouldn\u2019t succumb to the US and Israeli hubris acts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey should refrain from making any move that would undermine their interests. As I\u2019ve said, this war is not only unethical, but it is also unlawful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman added: \u201cThe US and Israel started their aggression against Iran. These European countries shouldn\u2019t be fooled in order to get into this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK and France will host a multinational meeting of defence ministers on Tuesday\u00a0on plans to restore trade flows through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the government in London.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual meeting will follow a two-day gathering in London of military planners in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny intervention in the Strait of Hormuz or the Persian Gulf would bring about further complications,\u201d Baghaei said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would rather exacerbate the prices.
