While several Republicans who broke with Trump chose not to seek re-election, Cassidy campaigned aggressively for a third six-year term and heavily outspent his rivals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1121\">On the morning of the vote, Trump attacked Cassidy on social media, calling him \u201ca disloyal disaster\u201d and \u201ca terrible guy\u201d.\u00a0Speaking after his defeat, Cassidy appeared to respond indirectly to Trump\u2019s remarks.\u00a0\u201cInsults only bother me if they come from somebody of character and integrity,\u201d he told supporters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1439\">He added: \u201cOur country is not about one individual. It is about the welfare of all Americans, and it is about the constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1441\" data-end=\"1511\">Letlow, meanwhile, embraced Trump\u2019s backing during her victory speech. \u201cI want to say thank you to a very special man, \u2026 the best president this country has ever had, President Donald Trump,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1753\">She later described Cassidy\u2019s impeachment vote as evidence that he had \u201cturned his back on Louisiana voters\u201d. Trump celebrated Cassidy\u2019s loss online, writing: \u201cThat\u2019s what you get by voting to impeach an innocent man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1865\" data-end=\"2102\">The Louisiana race is the latest in a series of contests in which Trump has backed efforts to remove Republicans who opposed him. Earlier this month, several Indiana state senators were also defeated after they had rejected Trump\u2019s redistricting plan aimed at winning more seats in the US Congress for Republicans.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2104\" data-end=\"2273\">Saturday\u2019s elections also took place amid confusion after a recent US Supreme Court ruling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/30\/has-the-us-supreme-court-weakened-the-voting-rights-act-and-how\">weakening part of the Voting Rights Act<\/a> related to electoral district maps.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2275\" data-end=\"2538\" data-is-last-node data-is-only-node>While the Senate primary went ahead as planned, Louisiana officials postponed primary elections for the US House of Representatives to redraw district boundaries.
