The outbreak has arisen just five months after the DRC declared its previous epidemic over.<\/p>\n<p>WHO emergencies chief Chikwe Ihekweazu said at the same news conference that the organisation\u2019s \u201cabsolute priority now is to identify all the existing chains of transmission\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will then enable us to really define the scale of the outbreak and be able to provide care,\u201d Ihekweazu said.<\/p>\n<p>Tedros first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/17\/who-declares-ebola-outbreak-in-dr-congo-uganda-a-global-health-emergency\">declared the emergency<\/a> on Sunday and said he had done so without consulting other experts due to the urgency of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Health authorities say the outbreak is being fuelled by the Bundibugyo strain, a type of Ebola virus for which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/5\/17\/drc-faces-deadly-ebola-resurgence-amid-worsening-humanitarian-crisis\">no vaccine or treatment exists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"suspected-super-spreader-event\">Suspected super-spreader event<\/h2>\n<p>Of the 600 suspected cases, the WHO said 51 had been confirmed in the DRC\u2019s northern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda has also confirmed two cases in Kampala, including one death, from two people who travelled from the DRC to Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>A medical missionary who contracted Ebola in the DRC is also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/5\/19\/us-authorities-say-missionary-who-contracted-ebola-en-route-to-germany\">being transported<\/a> to Germany for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>WHO experts said that they believe the outbreak began a few months ago, with the first suspected death reported on April 20.<\/p>\n<p>After the first death, officials said, a suspected super-spreader event is believed to have taken place at either a funeral or a healthcare facility, though investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>A European Union spokesperson, meanwhile, said on Wednesday the risk of an outbreak in Europe is \u201cvery low\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that diseases do not stop at the borders, and this is also the case of Ebola,\u201d spokesperson Eva Hrncirova told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cthere is no indication\u201d that Europeans need to do anything other than follow standard health advice, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Numbers are expected to rise, the WHO warns, as European officials emphasise that the risk of a European outbreak is low.
