Former world number one Daniil Medvedev is stunned by Australia\u2019s Adam Walton in the opening round at Roland Garros.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Daniil Medvedev could not avoid the \u2060French Open \u2060first-round trapdoor as he fell 6-2 1-6 6-1 1-6 6-4 to Australian wildcard Adam Walton in a match marked by sharp swings in momentum on the Parisian clay.<\/p>\n

The former world \u2060number one had fallen at the first hurdle in six of his previous nine appearances at the clay court Grand Slam, highlighting his uneasy relationship with Roland Garros and \u200cthe sport\u2019s slowest surface.<\/p>\n

Medvedev showed early signs of frustration on Tuesday when he dropped serve and then allowed Walton to build a 4-2 lead in the opening set, which the 30-year-old relinquished with a forehand that sailed over the baseline.<\/p>\n

The recovery was swift \u2060and emphatic as Medvedev regained his \u2060rhythm to wrest control by claiming the next set at the loss of only one game, but the sixth seed could not \u2060maintain his grip and let the third set slip away.<\/p>\n

World number 97 \u2060Walton, who was seeking a first \u2060win over a top-10 player, surrendered the fourth set but fought on bravely in the decider to break back at 4-4, before \u200cproducing a tight hold and then dismissing Medvedev for a famous victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s huge,\u201d Walton said of the victory in his on-court interview, adding that a win over Medvedev in Cincinnati last year had given him the confidence to repeat the \u200cfeat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I could do it and I believed, so I\u2019m just happy with my performance. I\u2019m really excited right now.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was such an up-and-down match. I\u2019m pretty tired right now. I got off to a hot start, and I felt like the ebbs \u200cand flows of the match were quite large.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just really proud of my efforts in the fifth set, to come from a break \u200cdown \u200cto get the win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Up next for the 27-year-old is \u200ca \u200csecond-round meeting with American Zachary Svajda, who beat Australian Alexei Popyrin.<\/p>\n
