With a two-thirds majority in parliament, they can make sweeping changes to the political system Orban built over his 16 years in power.<\/p>\n<p>Magyar had given Sulyok a deadline of this past Sunday to leave office or face being removed by constitutional means.<\/p>\n<p>While holding a mostly ceremonial role, Hungary\u2019s president is responsible for signing legislation into law and has the power to send bills passed by parliament to the Constitutional Court for review, raising concerns among supporters of the new government that he could use that power to obstruct its plans.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sulyok-refuses-to-resign\">Sulyok refuses to resign<\/h2>\n<p>Magyar held talks with Sulyok at the presidential Sandor Palace on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Later at a news conference, Magyar said the president had refused to resign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have told the President that if he maintains his stance and does not resign, I will inform \u2026the lawmakers of Tisza about our legislative proposals today and we will \u2060immediately start the necessary procedures,\u201d Magyar said.<\/p>\n<p>He said \u2060the legislative process would take about a month and would involve \u201cremoving all the puppets\u201d who took part in \u201cdismantling the rule of law and democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHungary does not belong to Tamas Sulyok nor to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/4\/13\/viktor-orban-swept-from-power-after-16-years-ruling-hungary\">Viktor Orban<\/a>. It doesn\u2019t belong to a single party or political system,\u201d Magyar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constitution states quite clearly that the president showcases the unity of the nation and guards the democratic functioning of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister did not give specifics on what kind of constitutional change would be used to remove Sulyok.<\/p>\n<p>Magyar accused Sulyok of failing to perform his duty on a number of issues, including failing to speak out when Orban made dehumanising statements about his political opponents and critics or when the previous government passed legislation banning an LGBTQ pride event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in Hungary\u2019s interest that this institution \u2013 the office of the president \u2013 regain the prestige that has been eroded by its silence and inaction,\u201d Magyar said.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Sulyok\u2019s office released a statement that said Magyar\u2019s calls for the president to resign \u201cadversely affect both the constitutional functioning and the authority of the institution of the President of the Republic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that Sulyok had requested a legal assessment of the conflict from the Venice Commission, a group of legal experts with Europe\u2019s top human rights group and part of the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After coming to power in April, PM Peter Magyar had given Sulyok a deadline of Sunday to leave office.
