With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was the latest turn in the swiftly developing situation surrounding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/6\/12\/are-iran-us-really-close-to-a-breakthrough-deal\">efforts<\/a> to reach a more lasting end to the war, which the US and Israel launched against Iran on February 28.<\/p>\n<p>It further indicated that any breakthrough remained on shaky ground, despite Trump on Thursday saying a deal had been \u201capproved\u201d and an official signing could happen within days.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian \u2060Foreign \u2060Minister Abbas Araghchi, meanwhile, in a post on X on Friday that an \u201cIslamabad Memorandum of \u2060Understanding\u201d towards a ceasefire had \u201cnever been closer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He urged media outlets to refrain from speculating about the terms until they were finalised. Trump posted a screenshot of the message on his Truth Social account.<\/p>\n<p>In his post, the US president did not specifically clarify what Iranian report he was referencing; however, his post came shortly after the official Iranian state news agency, IRNA, published what it described as seven main points of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The report indicated virtually no compromise from Iran on key issues that have long held up a breakthrough in a more lasting deal, since an agreement to pause fighting was reached in early April.<\/p>\n<p>It said that no new agreements had been reached on Iran\u2019s nuclear programme, saying only that new nuclear negotiations would begin 60 days after the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the US.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, it said Iran made no agreement to relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz, and that the preliminary agreement relates only to the normalisation of passage in the waterway and maritime security. Tehran will address the matter with Oman, it said.<\/p>\n<p>IRNA reported that the US had committed to ending Israel\u2019s ongoing invasion and offensive in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>It further said that a portion of Iran\u2019s frozen assets will be released upon the signing of a deal, with further release, the lifting of sanctions, and war damage compensation to be negotiated at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>US Vice President JD Vance on Friday batted away the prospect of any funds being released immediately upon the deal\u2019s signing, saying such an unfreezing would only happen if Iran met certain obligations under the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is going to get us a good outcome, one way or the other,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said that Iran had agreed to a \u201cperformance-based deal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The deal would see the dismantling of Iran\u2019s nuclear programme, the destruction of nuclear material and the Strait of Hormuz re-opened, the official said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternating-messages\">Alternating messages<\/h2>\n<p>In recent weeks, Trump and his top officials have repeatedly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/6\/10\/trump-hardens-tone-against-iran-says-may-keep-going-with-strikes\">alternated<\/a> between threatening Iran and saying a deal was within reach.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the US and Iran exchanged two days of strikes.
