
{"id":7393,"date":"2026-06-20T16:35:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T16:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2026\/06\/20\/where-do-irans-political-factions-stand-on-the-us-peace-deal\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T16:35:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T16:35:20","slug":"where-do-irans-political-factions-stand-on-the-us-peace-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pronews.in\/index.php\/2026\/06\/20\/where-do-irans-political-factions-stand-on-the-us-peace-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Where do Iran\u2019s political factions stand on the US peace deal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p><strong>Tehran, Iran \u2013<\/strong> Iran Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei\u2019s reservations about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/6\/18\/irans-supreme-leader-says-approved-us-deal-despite-having-different-view\">his country\u2019s interim peace deal<\/a> with the United States have emboldened the country\u2019s hardline political grouping, which opposes any concessions with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s new supreme leader appears to have handed responsibility for the deal over to President Masoud Pezeshkian, a relative moderate, who is now under fire from a more hardline camp that believes war with the US could restart soon.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, signed by Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump \u2013 through mediation by Pakistan, Qatar and others \u2013 is also challenged by all political factions in Israel, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/6\/19\/destruction-is-the-goal-israel-steers-between-the-us-iran-and-lebanon\">advocate military action<\/a> against Iran to weaken Tehran and its \u201caxis of resistance\u201d coalition, including the Hezbollah armed group in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at the internal dialogue in Iran since the memorandum of understanding was signed, and how different camps in Iran are framing it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-did-khamenei-say\">What did Khamenei say?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"khamenei-has-not-been-seen-or-heard-from-publicly-since-succeeding-his-father-as-supreme-leader-in-march-it-is-unconfirmed-whether-he-will-appear-when-the-former-supreme-leader-is-to-be-buried-in-july\">Khamenei has not been seen or heard from publicly since succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, as supreme leader in March, but his view has been made clear on the Iran-US deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, as a matter of principle, held a different view,\u201d a brief, written statement attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday said, in reference to the signing of the MoU with the US.<\/p>\n<p>But it said he granted his permission after \u201cexplicit acceptance of responsibility\u201d by President Pezeshkian, as head of the Supreme National Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>He \u201calso explicitly stated that if the American side seeks to make excessive demands, they will not submit to them\u201d, he said of Pezeshkian. The statement said that upcoming in-person negotiations \u201cwill not mean acceptance of the enemy\u2019s position\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian state-linked media have said Khamenei also conditioned that at least three-quarters of the members of the security council, including military commanders, would have to approve the deal. Almost all members are believed to have voted in favour of the deal, but the details of the voting process are still unconfirmed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the authorities saying?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme National Security Council released a statement to reassure Khamenei that it will abide by safeguarding \u201cthe rights of the Iranian nation and the resistance front\u201d while honouring the memory of Iranian leaders killed during the war with the US.<\/p>\n<p>The council will advance talks with \u201ctotal distrust\u201d towards the US and has pre-determined plans to retaliate if the other side violates any provisions, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Pezeshkian called the text a \u201chistoric document and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/6\/18\/what-the-trump-iran-14-point-plan-says-about-lebanon-hormuz-and-uranium\">message from a powerful Iran<\/a> that peace will be realised under the shadow of mutual respect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis text reflects the voice of a nation that has not traded its dignity and independence for any threat or pressure,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator, thanked Khamenei for his \u201cguiding and wise message\u201d and said while the MoU consolidated gains made in the war into the negotiation process, it was only \u201cthe beginning of a difficult and winding road\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ghalibaf also cast himself as a \u201cpost-war economic commander\u201d and was unusually explicit about wanting decision-making authority during the negotiations process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not someone who remains without a decision and waits around. I ask that decision-making input be prepared for me so that I can make the right decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian authorities must now \u201ctake over the trench from the launcher crews, stand our ground, and lift the people out from under economic pressure\u201d, the official said. This comes as the war exacerbates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/6\/18\/rial-rebounds-and-stocks-soar-but-iranians-still-grapple-with-high-prices\">Iran\u2019s existing structural economic<\/a> problems.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-are-hardliners-protesting\">Why are hardliners protesting?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"some-of-the-supporters-of-the-islamic-republic-say-khamenei-s-message-strengthens-their-belief-that-iran-must-continue-to-press-the-strait-of-hormuz-and-refuse-to-grant-concessions-instead-of-making-a-deal\">Supporters of Khamenei say Iranian negotiators must continue to press for control of the Strait of Hormuz and should walk out of talks if a deal does not include this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/27\/guns-in-the-streets-as-us-israel-intensify-month-long-attacks-across\">State-backed rallies held in Iranian cities<\/a>, held nightly during the war, have seen criticism of Pezeshkian, Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. These figures are considered part of the moderate camp and viewed by hardliners as most likely to offer the US concessions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr President, if the conditions set by the supreme leader are not realised, it will be us, the blade and your throat. We will make you miserable,\u201d Mohammad Ali Bakhshi, a state-backed maddah, or lay religious eulogist, said in Shahr-e Ray, located near the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Mehdi Tabatabaei, a communications official in the president\u2019s office, demanded Bakhshi and other \u201csuspicious elements\u201d be prosecuted for sowing discord between Iran\u2019s different political camps.<\/p>\n<p>Some hardline MPs have demanded that the parliament, which has remained closed since the start of the war except for a handful of in-person meetings, be fully reopened so it can potentially block any deal with the US, which is harmful to Iranian interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe fair and open the parliament, my supreme leader is left alone,\u201d Mohammad Mannan Raisi, a representative of the ultraconservative city of Qom, wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>In the holy Shia city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, Ayatollah Ahmad Alamolhoda, the influential Friday prayers leader and representative of the supreme leader, said, \u201cOur fight is not over\u201d with Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor 70 years, this system has inflicted all kinds of crimes, injustices, and merciless massacres upon us. Are we supposed to back down?! Avenging our martyred imam will not be achieved by killing one corrupt, sinful dog, polluted with every kind of wickedness.
