Many others have died or disappeared while attempting the journey in overcrowded boats.<\/p>\n<p>The pope\u2019s visit came as governments in Europe and the United States have placed growing emphasis on border controls, detention and deportations.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate message to Americans marking the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/7\/4\/trump-praises-army-rails-against-communism-in-us-250th-anniversary-speech\">250th anniversary<\/a> of US independence, the first US-born pope said defending human life also meant \u201cwelcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>More than 14,000 migrants have reached Italy by sea so far this year, according to the United Nations refugee agency, with more than half landing in Lampedusa.
