The Zoox vehicle, under teleguidance, reversed, after which first responders placed traffic cones at the scene, blocking two of the three lanes.<\/p>\n<p>Zoox said a new software update intends to enhance the existing capability of detecting and responding to heavy smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Morrison, who heads the US vehicle regulatory agency, said in a letter to autonomous vehicle (AV) companies that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has documented multiple instances of \u2060robotaxis driving into active emergency scenes.<\/p>\n<p>The letter also mentioned other incidents \u2060when the vehicles \u201cblocked the paths of ambulances and firefighters, or failed to recognize and respond to basic safety conditions like flashing lights, flares, smoke, fire, and traffic cones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NHTSA said it would schedule \u2060meetings with vehicle developers by the end of the month to solicit solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn AV that cannot safely interact with \u2060first responders is a danger to the general public,\u201d \u2060Morrison said in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>In late May, local media in Dallas reported that a Waymo self-driving vehicle partially blocked a route fire trucks were using to get to an apartment building on fire.<\/p>\n<p>Other \u200cvideos have shown Waymo vehicles blocking an ambulance and driving through an active police scene.<\/p>\n<p>The NHTSA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating various incidents \u200cinvolving self-driving vehicles, including Waymo vehicles passing stopped school buses with their lights activated in violation of Texas state law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The recall is the latest development in a series of reports of autonomous vehicles impeding emergency response efforts.
