The process has been extremely difficult \u2026 and what I experienced in prison, I truly wouldn\u2019t wish on anyone,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>As he arrived at Palmerola International Airport, he was greeted by his family and dozens of supporters of his National Party.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"arrest-warrant-suspended\">Arrest warrant suspended<\/h2>\n<p>Despite his pardon on the US charges, Hernandez is expected to appear in court on August 3 to face the Honduran charges.<\/p>\n<p>However, he was not detained upon arrival in Honduras because an arrest warrant was suspended in June, and local activists are concerned that the trial will turn out to be a sham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything points to the suspension being the first step,\u201d said Joaquin Mejia, a lawyer and researcher for the Reflection, Research and Communication Team, a human rights organisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll come, they\u2019ll likely issue him alternative measures to imprisonment to keep up appearances, and then he\u2019ll end up without any problem, without any sanction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a social majority that is outraged but doesn\u2019t speak out because of fear,\u201d Mejia added \u201cWe\u2019re talking about the boss of all drug bosses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez, once considered an ally by the US in its \u201cwar on drugs\u201d, led Honduras from 2014 to 2022. During that time, he said during a meeting with drug dealers that they would <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/honduras-president-hernandez-drug-trafficking-trial-03ff42d25f3ee3d5c93a7d2f024dc67b\">\u201cshove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos\u201d,<\/a> according to a US prosecutor at his trial in New York.<\/p>\n<p>A Pandora Papers corruption investigation accused Hernandez and other high-profile officials of diverting nearly $11m in state funds to political campaigns from 2010 to 2013.
