Japan has reiterated its commitment towards the development of India\u2019s Northeastern region by being one of the partner countries for the Advantage Assam 2.0 infrastructure and investment summit held in Guwahati.\u00a0<\/p>\n Participating in the session \u2018Act East, Act Fast and Act First\u2019 on Tuesday February 25, 2025, Japanese Ambassador to India and Bhutan ONO Keiichi highlighted key infrastructure developments in the Northeast region in addition to the growth in academic collaborations and people-to-people ties.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Japanese Ambassador also met the Assam Chief Minister on the sidelines of the summit and discussed sectors like the semiconductor ecosystem and clean energy.<\/p>\n \u201cHad a great meeting with Hon\u2019ble CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma discussing the semiconductor ecosystem and clean energy in Assam. Excited about the fruitful discussion and the next steps we confirmed!\u201d he later said in a post on social media platform X.<\/p>\n In his remarks, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar acknowledged Japan’s role in the Northeast, saying, \u201cWhere Japan is concerned, I also specifically recognize the contribution of our Act East Forum, whereby development projects in the North East have been accorded priority by Japan. We are currently discussing significant enhancing of mobility and training in this relationship. I am confident that Assam and other North Eastern States will be beneficiaries\u201d.<\/p>\n Japan is a key overseas partner when it comes to the development of East and Northeast India.\u00a0<\/p>\n It has provided over INR 22,000 crore for sectors like roads, water supply and sewage, electricity, healthcare, and biodiversity. This includes INR 880 crore to the flagship \u2018North East Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project\u2019<\/p>\n The two-day \u2018Advantage Assam 2.0\u2019 meet was attended by the heads of 62 foreign missions, in addition to a Minister and his delegation from Bhutan.\u00a0<\/p>\n The \u2018Advantage Assam 2.0 – Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025\u2019, held in Guwahati on February 25-26, 2025, marked the largest investment promotion and facilitation initiative by the Government of Assam.\u00a0<\/p>\n It highlighted the state\u2019s geostrategic advantages and its potential as a major investment destination. The event showcased the state as a gateway to Northeast India and Southeast Asia offering immense opportunities to global investors and ensuring seamless access to global markets.<\/p>\n In recent years, India has taken steps to increase its footprint in the Indo-Pacific region, with a specific focus on Southeast Asia. It renamed its Look East Policy as Act East Policy (AEP) in 2014, in an attempt to provide sharper focus to its engagement with other countries in the region.<\/p>\n The objective of the ‘Act East Policy\u2019 is to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties and develop strategic relationships with countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
